Good morning,
Off topic but Iâm packing to move (next week!) and I got this Renaissance painting photo last night
We write for ourselves, but we post for others.
(this came out of a conversation in the comments on a previous post about an author threatening to stop updating a fic because of lack of engagement)
So thereâs this idea that fic writers should write for themselves and not care too much about stats or engagement,
and i totally get the sentiment behind that. if writing becomes entirely about stats and external validation, something important does get lost - creative freedom and joy, conviction in your own writing
but i also think:
âi write for myself, but i post for others.â
because posting fic is not only self-expression. itâs social. ao3 is called an archive, but emotionally it often functions as a community space.
people post for connection, for participation, for others to bear witness to their pain and trauma and grief,
and i donât think most people are asking to be admired so much as acknowledged. thereâs something deeply human about wanting another person to encounter something that mattered to you and go:
âok, yeah, I see what you were trying to say. I see you.â
especially because fanfic is often people processing very real feelings through fictional characters at a safe distance, one step removed,
and then uploading that deeply personal thing into a shared archive and hoping somebody else might connect with it.
And i think thatâs why it hurts so much when you summon up the courage and post a fic into the void and you get nothing back,
and then itâs like,
does anyone see me? does anyone even care?
I think sometimes posting something on AO3 feels like performing stand-up comedy. Youâre standing on stage, telling stories from your life, hoping for some kind of reaction, and all you hear back is the chirping of crickets.
Itâs just a story that has been living in your head for so long. You plan it out, write outlines, come up with dialogue, characters, and their interactions. It becomes a rich, expansive world that exists inside you, and you feel so full of it that you just want to share it with someone.
So you spend your time turning it into text, hoping that now someone else will get to know this story too, and that youâll have a chance to talk about it with them. It would be so nice to discuss events from it, like in a book club, you know?
And when thereâs no response, you start thinking: maybe I made it all up? Maybe the story isnât that interesting? Maybe Iâm weird for even thinking of something like this? Was all of it pointless? Does that mean Iâll only ever be able to talk about this story with myself?
And then itâs as if you retreat into a dark room in your mind, hug your knees, and quietly whimper, thinking about deleting this "embarrassment" before too many people see it.
So when authors say they donât want to update their work because of a lack of engagement, itâs not an attempt to beg for comments. Theyâre just people who also feel things and want to be heard and understood.
Yes this put into words what Iâve been thinking lately!
Just popping in here to humbly request if anyone would be willing to leave a comment on my ficsâŚI think theyâre getting lonely
James "I asked chatgpt" Potter
Remus "I asked the birds and the ghosts and souls lingering in the corridors of Hogwarts and they asked you to stfu with your ai" Lupin
I love this haha

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers. Letâs spread the self-love đ
Iâm very new to the whole fanfic world, so I only have two fics rn lol:
https://archiveofourown.org/works/76983951
https://archiveofourown.org/works/86083136/chapters/227615306
I havenât read a ton of fanfics either but these are my favorite authors:
@rose-leviosa @beckettsimpleton @evesaintyves
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
My new installment of The Uninhabitable Home is up!
Remus and Sirius learning to live together, drama with Snape, and general shenanigans.
It's very interesting that Tonks is so often characterised one-dimensionally in the fandom as always happy, cheerful, goofy, or, hell, even childish, given the way she's portrayed in, like, every book she's in.
That idea just doesn't hold up to scrutiny, and I'm pulling out my soap box and going on a rant.
Tonks absolutely brings the jokes in The Advanced Guard chapter. She's not afraid to make fun of herself ('did you hear me break that plate') or ask really stupid questions ('I suppose it varies, just like with wizards?'), or make fun of Mad-Eye ('you do know that's disgusting don't you?').
But, beyond 'The Woes Of Mrs Weasley' ('my head of house said I lacked the necessary qualities [...]like the ability to behave myself'), she doesn't crack jokes at the quite same rate ever again.
She's still funny, the narrative hasn't actually forgotte, it's brought up all the time ('at least Tonks is a laugh'). But it's not the key thing that she is in every single instance.
There's so much more to her.
By Christmas in Ootp, we see she's got a bit of a bite: casually threatening Stan Shunpike with violence ('say his name again and I will curse you into oblivion' muttered Tonks, menacingly') and being serious and abrupt getting the kids to school ('And [Tonks] shoved Harry forward toward the steps').
She's "bossy", in charge, and in control there and in the Advanced Guard ('âWeâre not going through clouds!â shouted Tonks angrily.'). From the very beginning.
There's a vindictive, vengeful streak that rears it's head in DH ('I just wish I got her, I owe Bellatrix') whilst being very casual about violence ('we definitely injured Rodolphus').
And that stems from her almost irrational guilt complex that, whilst not the most pressing issue, is part of her struggle throughout HBP ('She thinks it was her fault [Sirius] died').
She's a solider and a fighter. The only other member of the Order who matches Tonks being in every key fight, is Remus. She's the protege of the most successful auror in the country, is known to be smart ('And sheâs more intelligent,'), and commits treason the first time the opportunity comes up.
I'm not sure I'd really classify Tonks as always cheerful or always goofy in just The Advanced Guard when she is definitely 'on' and, we can assume, lightening the mood ('stop being so cheerful Mad-Eye, or he'll think we're not taking this seriously') never mind all. of. the. time.
She's just funny.
It's a one-dimensional pigeon hole that you don't usually see other funny characters (like Remus or Sirius) getting stuck in at quite the same rate that Tonks seems to.
There's so much left unsaid about Tonks, the contradictions she's made of, the journey she goes on far in the background that has nothing to do with the kids, that it makes me want to hold her between my teeth and shake her like a chew toy.
Ugh I just love Tonks so much
After five months I started writing again! Itâs a âone shotâ weâll see how long it ends up being lol
Finally got my printer working which means I could finally print out one of @rose-leviosa âs incredible sketches and paint it!

Posted a new song for the musical yesterday!
This oneâs my favorite, it would mean the world if you gave it a listen (and leave a comment on YouTube if youâd like).
I know weâre all used to the whole Scabbers is Pettigrew thing but can you imagine getting kidnapped by some dude and then your very professional teacher appears and points a gun at your dog and goes âMr. Sprinkles is a war criminalâ
Why was Remus late for his first class
Joint in the bathroom
Crying in the bathroom
Crying in the bathroom while smoking a joint
Fell down the stairs
Spent too long in the bathroom singing into a hairbrush
Forgot he was a teacher
Sitting in a dark corner eating a banana
Having a breakdown to his dad through the floo
Spent too long deciding what to put in his briefcase (itâs empty)
May I add: argument with Snape about the use of the staff room?
Totally normal response to hearing that escaped convictâs name
Throwback Thursday to when I was 15 and made Tonksâs coat and wanted to dress up as her but my mom didnât let me dye my hair so I tried to use chalk and it didnât work very well but I was so proud anyway.

Should I put the [rough draft of my] libretto on AO3?
Yes, Iâd love to read it!
No, wait until itâs done
(The libretto is the lyrics, spoken lines, and stage directions of a musical)
*about remus and tonks*
snape: so how did you break up with him?
tonks: actually he broke up with me.
snape: oh. and how did you celebrate?
This is canon
