BittyBones fics (like those of other UnderTale AUs, admittedly) come in a variety of flavors. Your bond with a bitty in any given Reader-Insert fic might be sexual, romantic, platonic, familial, tense, tender, temporary, permanent, mutually beneficial, actively destructive, or a one-sided emotional dependency. But today is my last NSFWednesday on Tumblr, so let’s talk sex.
Most if not all of the BittyBones fics that I’ve seen featuring Sexually Active Bitties tend to be heatfics or multichaptered fics that happen to feature a heat cycle in at least one chapter. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing and makes total sense given how much UnderTale smut involves the monsters going into heat. But if bitties have reproductive cycles, doesn’t that mean they reproduce?
I haven’t actually seen much about pregnant bitties. Or anything about humans who help out with their bitty’s urge to breed actually getting bred.
(There’s a NSFW fanart of bitties being shoved together and ordered to procreate floating around somewhere, but it doesn’t really show whether or not that actually resulted in more bitties. However, there is a fic that I can’t remember the name of featuring a Cherry and a Grillbitty being a couple and I think the Cherry gets pregnant? If I’m remembering it right?)
In the first BittyBones fic I ever read–BitterSweetDeath’s “The Smallest Sans” (because obviously it would be a Sans/Reader that introduces me to the wonderful world of Bitties)–the bitties aren’t any different from the monsters of UnderTale because they are the monsters of UnderTale. In that story (and the Gaster/Reader spin-off, I assume), breaking the barrier activated a curse that shrunk them down into a bitty-sized state with bitty-sized magic attacks that are…less effective than what they were capable of before the barrier was destroyed. So, naturally, if monsters have heats, so do bitties (and in this fic, they definitely do~).

TellCosy’s “Monsters Should Be Cute!” doesn’t feature any interspecies romances nor any indications of monsters or bitties being subject to heat cycles, but does address the origins of bitties. While there’s no details on the technical aspects of the process, apparently bitties are actually derived from the magic of the full-sized monster they take after and the various AU “types” of bitties can even be categorized by “purity”, i.e. how closely they resemble the monster they were spawned from (although doing so may result in bullying, insecurity and generally unhealthy thought processes in bitties so the main character does not encourage this).
Both of these fics (and Chapter 6 of StripesnBooks’s “Embassy Exploits”, which takes an approach similar, but not identical to TellCosy’s) provide an easy explanation for why bitties have heats so long as full-sized monsters do (even though “The Smallest Sans” is the only one of these fics to even mention heat cycles), but most BittyBones fics don’t bother with mentioning where bitties actually come from and some don’t even give any indication of whether or not full-sized monsters exist in the world of the fic. And even in fics where full-sized monsters do exist, bitties are often noted to have less or weaker magic than their larger counterparts.
So if bitties have the instinctual urge to reproduce and expel magic via summoned genitalia to relieve said urge, what exactly does that mean for human/bitty couples? Some non-BittyBones Sans/Reader fics claim that monsters usually procreate via SOUL sex and summoned genitalia are either a deliberate choice to pleasure one’s partner or an instinctual response to the desire to pleasure said partner. This is potentially applicable to bitties. It’s also possible that summoned monster genitalia serve the exact same function as human genitalia except…magically. Unfortunately, both of these options imply that bitties, with their itty-bitty physical forms and itty-bitty magical output are simply unable to reproduce with humans without clinical aid, even if full-sized monsters can.
That’s a bit too anticlimactic a note to end my last NSFWednesday on Tumblr, though, SO LET’S FIX THAT.
When I started wondering why there are so many BittyBones Heatfics but none indicating that the heats actually accomplish anything (other than smutty goodness, naturally), there was something itching in the back of my brain, something I could’ve sworn I read before that seemed like a perfect fit…
It turns out I did read something that I think fits nicely into the “can bitties get humans pregnant” conundrum. But it wasn’t a fanfic. It was a listicle on Cracked.com that I read years before falling into the UnderTale fandom titled “The 6 Craziest Beliefs Entire Cultures Have Held About Sex”.
Items number 4 and 3 on this list (the numbers go in reverse order) kind of go hand-in-hand with each other, as Belief Number Four is that babies are physically built out of sperm and menstrual blood–meaning that it takes a LOT of sex to make a complete, full-sized baby–and Belief Number Three is basically an extension of Number Four. If it takes a lotta sperm to make a baby, then if more than one man’s sperm goes into the making of that baby, then the kid has more than one father.
Swap out “sperm” for “highly-concentrated heat-induced magic” and cut menstrual blood out of the equation and why couldn’t bitties reproduce like that?
(I seriously recommend that you read that list, by the way, just in those two parts there are some interesting observations on the social and familial structures that developed from these beliefs. Apparently, in those cultures polygamy benefits the kids. That is something that could be applied to several non-BittyBones fics.)
This might still prove an obstacle for one-bitty households, but BittyBones fics where the bitties aren’t just monsters shrunk down have the advantage over other AUs since you don’t need interdimensional tomfoolery to explain WHERE ALL THESE SKELETONS ARE COMING FROM. Indeed, I’ve seen several BittyBones fics featuring brothers being adopted together or multiple unrelated bitties being rescued from various situations and joining into one ragtag family. And if their heat cycles happen to sync up…or bitties of similar types have the same cycle right from the beginning?
At this point the only obstacle is getting all that expended magic to concentrate in one area that will allow a new bitty to form. Bitties with proportionately-sized genitalia and human-sized partners still have a problem, even with sheer numbers on their side. But whether or not bitties have sexual urges outside of their heats, it’s basically a given that heats will boost their magic output, and if summoned genitalia is subject to the whims of the summoner, then the size and shape can be altered, even if only to a certain extent. The trick is balancing how much magic goes into making the ectodick and how much goes into producing a powerful enough emission to reach where it needs to go (and, of course, maintaining a certain amount of arousal to actually build that magic up without expelling any of it).

Since this is getting deleted this weekend, I might as well throw in the thing that I originally wasn’t going to add to this post:
Since bitties are so small, it doesn’t take long for the magic to coalesce into a bittybones baby, meaning that pregnancies wouldn’t last very long. As a consequence, a human bearing a bittybones child might not develop the same physiological responses as a human bearing a human child since the hormones don’t have as much time to take effect.
But you can still breastfeed.
You’d have to ask a bitty and/or monster who is proficient in both Blue (gravity) and Green (healing) magic to apply alternating supplies of both for a while to give it a kick start, though.
