Some thoughts on Galuf
Be warned, there are unpopular opinions ahead bought on by a conversation with Quina-mun
If I’m honest, Galuf’s character (in relation to Faris) has always bothered me. Both in things he says and things he does. But the most notable instance of this is in the scene where we find out Faris is a woman.
If I can just put the setting into perspective for those who don’t know:
After swimming through several water logged, half sunken ship wrecks the party happen upon a fairly stable area and decide to spend the night there. Lenna goes off to put on dry clothes as Bartz and Galuf try to force Faris out of hers.
I use the word force, here, because Faris tells them to stop several times as her sprite judders to imply a struggle. They don’t listen to her and instead proceed to strip her. Bartz immediately backs off and goes silent. Galuf however opens his mouth and instantly says some rather - in my eyes - disturbing things for a man who just forcibly stripped a young woman.Â
In the GBA version he says something along the lines of how it’s a crime to hide such ‘assests’, an obvious allusion to her breasts. In the SNES version he says ‘I knew you were too beautiful to be a man’.Â
Both of these to me have very creepy undertones, as I imagine Faris stands there mortified and shaken that her secret has just been revealed and she’s just been violated that way. Indeed, when asked why she hides her sex Faris responds with a very short, clipped ‘Would YOU want to be the only woman among a band of pirates’. I should think the darker implications of that statement are quite clear? They certainly were to me on my first play through. Even after that Galuf proceeds to enforce that Faris should be more feminine, and act more lady like - that acting like a man makes her less attractive.Â
Galuf essentially, from this point on proceeds to take several shots at Faris’s worth and equate them to how feminine she is in that moment by implying she should wear dresses or soften her manner.Â
It’s something that’s always deeply unsettled me. But even more so is that people I’ve talked to about it (not including Quina mun) have claimed that Galuf’s behavior is alright because Faris doesn’t speak up against it.
