sooooo i know many people in this fandom are much more eloquent than i am and they have much better things to say, but this has been floating around in my head for a while and i just wanted to get it out 😌
i think that ismail’s season would have been an hundred times better if druck would focus on his struggle with gender identity. this should be the primary focus of the season, and i don’t think i’m expressing an unpopular opinion here if i say that so far, the gender identity storyline has been Incredibly lacking, pushed to the sideline and, honestly, without anything to stand on? so far, yes, we’ve seen ismail be uncomfortable grouped in with the guys, and they seem more comfortable being around the girls, but apart from that (and the “fight” with umut that was resolved in one clip where the writing was just cliché one-liners) it has been nowhere! and on top of that, the toxic friendship storyline with the insta’s, which was deemed one of the top things that had to be adressed in an ismail season, has been dumped almost as badly as the gender storyline. honestly, i’m not against a love interest storyline, i don’t mind any of the new characters, but i do think they could have easily made the season much better and more comprehensive by just… taking them out? so far i haven’t seen anything they absolutely add to the story, nothing they were absolutely necessary for.
of course, it seems obligatory for a skam season to have a love interest for the main, and i don’t mind this at all! i do think that they could have executed it a lot better by not making it the main storyline, though. take isak’s season, for example. you could say that this season is about the ship, evak, and their story is the most important. i think that this story is actually just the backdrop to the main storyline - isak finding his sexuality and learning to be comfortable with it. this doesn’t mean that the evak storyline is completely unimportant, on the contrary, it is crucial as framework for isak’s self-discovery storyline. but it’s not the most important part, either. that is what i would want ismail’s season to be like. start with ismail, and his journey to self-discovery, and make the rest the background to that. maybe the toxic friendship storyline could be the framework for this! show me ismail finding out more about themselves, consequently creating distance between them and constantin, constantin doesn’t like that, cue the fight we had last episode. most of all, i just want to see more clips of ismail on his own. show me how he experiences gender! if we borrow from og skam again, take the “am i gay quiz” scene and show me ismail looking up things like different labels, identities, different pronoun sets! show me ismail actually going to david, or even lou, and talk about these things! just please don’t make this storyline look like an afterthought.
these are just some of my personal thoughts, as someone who’s been questioning their gender identity for some time now. i would’ve really loved to see some of that in skam, which sadly has not really happened (so far! i’m keeping an open mind).
