Necessary Risks

Indeed, the smile falls away, his mouth setting into a grim line. ââŚcâmon inside, Syl.â His dwelling is comfortable enough, if not somewhat messy. Baby sits in the middle of the living room on a spread of cardboard, surrounded by various parts that Rico had found. He was always looking for ways to improve his beloved bike, and every so often he found something shinier or more powerful that would work on her. By this point, she was truly one of a kind.
He gestures her to a couch, and sits in a chair across.
ââŚyou probably know Iâm gonna say this, but I donât think itâs a good idea. At all. Not after last time, Syl.â
âI know, love. And you must know that I do not say this lightly.â She takes the offered seat, hands folded calmly on her lap. âI do not like it, but I believe it may be necessary for our survival. Please listen to me.â
Sylvie breathes in slowly, trying to line up her words. This is something that she has not told anyone in the Enclave until this very moment.
âYou remember, of course, when the Enclave was dying. We had no idea then what may have caused it, but I noticed that it healed after others crossed over into our world. Powerful others.â
She glances into Ricoâs face to make sure heâs paying attention, then continues.
âAnd when I thought about it, it seemed to me that the Enclaveâs energies began to decline not just recently, but even before that. Right after⌠after we lost Kayra. You remember how she was. The Enclave was never the same after she was gone, and now I have become quite sure that this world may run on the power of its residents.â
âEven if thatâs true though, how the fâ sâcuse me, how do we know whoâs safe? Who ainât? People wear masks, Syl. Somebody who seems loike they wanna help, loike they got your best interests in mind, can be the worst bloody person in the world.â He bites his lip. Monsters donât always have claws and big yellow fangs. Sometimes theyâre handsome gentlemen offering to get a homeless kid off the streets.
âSyl. It ainât your fault. Youâre a wonderful person, the best Iâve ever known. But some of these folks you let in with good intentions, they could see this not as a safe place, but a bloody berry patch to be picked clean. Itâs happened before. Whoâs to say it wonât happen again? I donât wont anything to happen to you.â
âNo, Rico. We cannot know who is safe. But something must be done, or else we could all die.â Sylvieâs voice is gentle, but her pale blue eyes are steely. âI know what I am asking of you, cher. But you knew something was wrong before, when the rest of us were fooled. I am going to need that perception and your watchful eyes. And this time, I will listen to you. You have more than earned that right, love.â
She would trust him with her life. Heaven knows heâd already saved it once before.
âI wish to bring someone in, on a trial period, to find out whether the Enclave is affected. After that, we can discuss what to do on a more permanent basis. Is this acceptable to you?â
âNo. No, it ainât bloody acceptable. At all.â His fingers go for a pack of cigarettes in his pocket. He doesnât light up though, not in her presence. âBut if wot you sayâs true- and I donât see why it wouldnâ be, I saw the bloody place die off anâ perk back up with me own eyes- we donât got much of a choice but to give it a shot. But I WILL be watching people. Like a bloody HAWK. Anâ Iâm sorry, but I canât be held responsible for the consequences they put on themselves if they put a toe outta line. Iâm not taking chances. Not with this place, and not with you. Wot happened before- it ainât happening again on my watch.â
