You are so brave and quiet I forget you are suffering.

Class is over; that means no more journals! This does not necessarily mean I will stop posting though. If I have the time I will try to continue to reflect my thoughts every now and then. Philosophy is a subject that, once experienced, makes you constantly question the world around you. It is a very intriguing class that will influence my thinking for the rest of my life!
Keep an open mind.

Livin them!
Should we set goals?
Today our discussions on happiness led us to the idea and concept of goals. We discussed what the points of goals are, how they affect our happiness, and whether or not we should set them.
We came to the overall conclusion that goals are there to add purpose to our life. They are used to set targets in our lives and give us something to work hard for. Where we found debate however is how a goal makes you happy. Many people believed that goals are made so when you accomplish them you are happy; they think happiness comes with the completion of the goal. I do agree with this a little bit, but I believe that happiness at the completion of goals is only temporary. I believe true happiness is found during the journey to completing your goals. I think goals are there to give you some sort of direction in your life, but happiness comes when you enjoy the time spent working toward this goal. It reminds me of the quote “life is about the journey, not the destination.” Goals set a destination for you, but your life, identity, and happiness are found throughout the journey!
I do think it is important that everyone sets goals. Even though accomplishing them will not guarantee you long-term happiness, having them there gives you direction and motivation. When you set goals you are more likely to work harder and enjoy the present more.
Sometimes we need to be reminded of our humanity
Rich Vs Poor
Do different classes have different standards of happiness?
Today our discussion on happiness expanded. We focused on the idea of what makes people happy. The question that was left lingering is whether we think different classes of society and/or different cultures have different standards of happiness?
I think this is true; I believe that happiness is different for everyone. I think standards of happiness are associated with what people have and have not experienced. People who live in poverty have not experienced a lot; they are satisfied when they have enough food or money to get them through one day. I believe that it is easier for these types of people to find happiness. Since they have experienced less, when/if they are encountered with a new experience, such as having enough food for a week or being able to afford a “luxury” item, they become much more appreciative and truly happier than others. Rich people, on the other hand have experienced so much that they don’t find happiness as easily. They already have so much that they are never happy, they just keep buying more to try and become happy. When they buy these things they consider themselves happy; but I believe they never truly will be unless they appreciate what they have. I associated happiness with appreciation. I believe that everyone has a different idea of what happiness is to them and how they earn it, however, I think one only truly finds happiness when they stop trying to continuously add to what they have, but instead take a break and appreciate what they already have. Due to this, I believe that different classes and cultures have different standards and ideas of happiness, but only true happiness can be found through appreciation.
