               SHE’S AN OUTSIDER to their ranks, just as they are all outsiders in a way. Orphans of the world that would not raise them, born with their fists curled across their breastbones, grasping at an emptiness they’ll never outgrow. But she’s an outsider’s outsider, not just another tragic backstory to be patchworked into the desperate masses. She’s here because she can be, not because she has to be, && her ability to retain a sense of separation while still sliding seamlessly into place Clint’d eked out for her ( please— she’s just a kid. I’ll do triple shifts just give her somewhere to sleep—) makes her all the more interesting. 

               Natalia. Her name; garnered from one of their fleeting exchanges information. So quick && controlled it felt like a secret to speak it out loud. She’s running from something, that much he can tell. The pretty ones are always running from something. 

               He knows she’s watching him. But he doesn’t doubt that if she didn’t want her presence to be felt, it wouldn’t be. She’s got the same spring-loaded coil beneath her skin that he does— a fracture point hidden behind scar tissue’s natural armor. Except hers has steel weaving.

     She’s tired, knotted up tight from having to be on guard at every moment. Living on the edge of fear turns bone to fossils and after too long makes it impossible to stand tall again. Nothing matters but securing her escape; she’ll kill herself before she goes back.

     Her voice is gently accented, rounded vowels held in the way of a local native. Of course she can speak flawless ‘ American ‘ but this serves her purpose better for now. Pale fingers dance over the bleached and slightly warped wood as she comes steadily closer. “ I would not call it staring. More ... observing. ” Wide green eyes flick to the painted target and take in the pockmarked wood centered right around the center. An impressive clustering; she won’t soon underestimate his aim.

     Silence. Then, “ you know you’ll be better than your master some day soon. ” Matter-of-factly. With all the confidence born of childlike assurance cut with cold calculation.
