The Midwinter Feast

Welcome, everyone, to the second annual Redwall Midwinter Gift Exchange. This is a “secret Santa” type fanwork exchange where each participant makes a gift secretly for one other participant.

What are we making? Any type of fanwork you like; fic, art, poetry, comics. Signups are done by Google form, same as last year, and on the form you can make up to three requests for your gifter to choose from. These are mainly a guideline; your gifter may not be able to match them exactly, but they give a good starting point.

Basic ground rules are simple; since Redwall is a children’s series, let’s keep everything SFW, and keep any violence to reasonable canon-typical levels.

Signups will be open through December 19th. You should have your assignment on the 23rd, and your gifts should be posted on January 23rd. The pinch-hitter deadline is the 31st of January. (These dates may change, but I’ll make a post updating everyone if they do.)

When you post your gift, don’t forget to @mention your giftee and this blog, and tag it with #redwall midwinter gift exchange 2021, so everyone can see it.

Prompt:  Rose’s ghost haunting the Abbey in some capacity like Martin’s does.

Mattimeo ran. He was already out of breath and his legs felt like they were made of lead, but still he ran onward through the dark pine forest. Gasping and panting he forced himself onward from the terror which followed him. He couldn’t remember how long he had been running, but it felt like hours, and still the forest showed no sign of ending, and there was no hint of light to be seen. As he ran, Mattimeo heard things moving through the trees around him, accompanied by primal shrikes.

This is for the Redwall secret Santa gift exchange (@redwall-secret-santa). I had @theaggresivepacifist as my person. The prompt was their third request. "A short fluffy-ish fic where Romsca doesn't actually die but instead gets to go live at the Abbey."

Well here it is. It had been awhile since I read Pearls of Lutra, but, I wrote from what I remembered about the book and what I googled on names. I hope @theaggresivepacifist and everyone else enjoys this short fic.

It had been an interesting season, to say the least. After helping Grath Longfletch scene her family and saving the Abbot from Emperor Ublaz, Martin had been surprised when the about too him back to Romsca's ship. There, in the Galley pantry they found a very badly injured Romsca, who was starting to fade fast. Between Martin, Abbot Durral, and a few others they were able to save her. Now, Martin saw Romsca lounging by the Abbey pond enjoying the beautiful day they were having.

"You know, Martin," Romsca said as he approached to ask her a question or two, "if it were not for your Abbot, I more than likely would not be here now."

"Oh? What do you mean?" Martin replied. "I know he helped save you from death, but I am guessing you are talking about something else though."

"You guessed right, Martin. When I had your Abbot on my ship he impressed me with his actions and the kindness he showed me. Because of that, he showed me that what I was doing was wrong and that there was a better way. But I figured I would never be good enough to live in a place like this. This... Abbey." Romsca said to Martin.

"Ah. Now I understand, and I am very glad that you have decided to leave the other way and life behind you and join us here at the Abbey."

"I am glad too. This is such a beautiful and peaceful place. I am glad I came to your Abbey."

"I was going to ask you a couple of questions, but, it can wait till later." Martin said as he sat down beside Romsca in the grass.

"Oh? And what were your questions Warrior?"

"Well... My first question can wait for another day. My second question was... Are you hungry for lunch?" He asked as he got up from the ground.

"After tasting the food at Redwall Abbey? YOU BET I AM!!! And we better hurry if we want to get anything before Clecky eats all the food." Replied Romsca as she gingerly got up from the ground as well and started for Cavern Hole.
