Its funny reading ppls opinions abt the backrooms bc so far all the criticisms ive seen about it was "backrooms was supposed to be this, not that." I lucked out because the movie was made for what about the backrooms appealed to me specifically: the psychological perspective, which is precisely what kane parsons stated in an interview, just in the words of "i wanted to focus on characters and their relationship to the backrooms." The simple eerieness and mystery being the only focus that some videos or games center on, or the lore-heavy experience that fanwiki and kane's web series center on, are angles that have already been explored via their respective mediums. Kane parsons saw the movie as an opportunity to focus on another perspective that the videos, games, and wiki dont explicitly center themselves on: the very intimate perspective of what kind of person would be drawn to the backrooms enough to want to stay in it. Not as a horror house to run around in or a mystery to be simply mystified by. Kane parsons saw the opportunity to portray the psychological underlying of why the backrooms has become such a cultural icon, in a way, for this generation in this climate (some context: dying shopping centers / malls / stores being like the modern day gothic horror for crumbling, empty castles and mansions)
