I'm a Chinese-Indonesian-American freelance illustrator and designer. I love fairy tales, magical girls, gastropods, bunnies, and original characters π!
Hello hello! I really really love your art especially how you draw hair! Would it be alright to ask what is your process on that?
Thank you! I feel like I struggle with this question every time I pick up the pen honestly.
I think the best things to try and think about is how the hair is layered, how it's parted, and what the weight/texture is. I think the other parts of my process generally come from trying to serve those elements as best as I can. I also don't really use heavy shines for hair since it's not a part of my personal preferences.

Hiya! Do you have any tips for the people trying to recreate your style to make OLNF sprites? ^^
It's a bit of a hard question to answer since I draw in my own style without having to be so intentional about it!
In terms of my process, I do lineart while putting colors on another layer underneath - sometimes I see some people emulating my style through painting with minimal layers, and while the results can be really close (and pretty!), I think that knowledge can still be helpful since I think that separation tempers some of the softness/extra cohesion that painting brings. It also lets you edit things like expression more.
Also as a boundary (so not directly towards whoever's asking), since this has happened before, please don't trace over my OC's π
Hihi!! I really love the way you color your lineart!! It looks very soft and cozy :3 Whatβs your process like for coloring your lines?
Thank you! I don't think my process is very special personally - I just lock the opacity when I finish the lineart, then color each section (like the skin/hair/clothes) in with a darker color than the base. I'll go back and pick a slightly brighter/darker ones if things turn out too dull or lack contrast until it looks okay to me.
ur ocs and art style are so adorbs!!!!!! is there specific steps/ways you decide the pallette, or at least how you choose colors for shading/rendering and such? hope you have a great day :33
Hello, thank you! When it comes to my original works/full pieces, I don't really use the eye drop tool from references - I used to have this issue when I was younger where I would establish a palette for my characters and for that to be "official" in my head. As a result, that palette wouldn't change as my style adapted over time, and this also made the character less flexible when other people were drawing them.
These days I like to pick the colors on my own each time and experiment a little each time I draw them so that their palette suits the idea/concept behind the work more than anything else. I try to give characters a little bit of wiggle room when it comes to what looks like "them." As an example, my character Ray is supposed to have these dark magenta eyes, but I make them more red, pink, or brown depending on what I think suits the drawing. I also think this encourages me to experiment more with design so that I'll be able to differentiate their palettes from one another, but I definitely still have things that I like more than others. I love warm-toned hair and brown eyes, so I end up with a lot of characters who look like that.
I'd say that my colors lean warm colors and towards peach pinks just out of preference. When I render characters, I try to include a little bit of their theme color/a color I like from another part of their design in the shading to tie that in.
I usually have the character I'm drawing up as a reference so I can be more intentional about what I'm picking and how those colors look next to each other. Individual ideas of tone and mood will depend on your own observation and experiences, so it's something you build over time as you figure out what you want to express in your art.

Hi, I know this is a bit early but I wanted to know if your doing Artfight this year and if so what's your profile?
I do Artfight every year so I plan on it! I might not have quite as much time for it as others but I'll still definitely participate. My profile is "nice" π
Hi just wanted to ask, do you do art trades? If not than sorry I asked.
I do from time to time! The ones I've done recently have been when other people just happened to approach me when I had less on my plate, but when I initiate I'll usually ask for them either on Toyhouse or Bluesky.
If so do you have a preferred place to send it to?
Yeah I'm totally fine with it!
If you tag me on any social media I'll share it! You can also feel free to DM me - I'll also probably ask for the image through Drive or anywhere the full resolution can be uploaded so I can stare at it ππ
It's no pressure at all by the way! But I'd be honored if someone took the time to draw any of my characters.

How did you come up with their stories/designs and color palettes?
Im currently having a hard time with coming up with characters for a story I'm writing and just wanted to know your process for inspiration.
Hi, thank you so much!
Creating characters is done differently by everyone, so there's no truly correct way to go about story or design, but I'd be happy to share some of the processes that I personally use!
When it comes to stories that I'm writing, I want to make sure that each character has a role and a purpose for being in the plot. Sometimes in my documents, I'll create a list with the cast and write reasons why they're important, which helps me identify both what's unique about them and what they currently lack.
I try to prevent having characters who do nothing for the narrative, even if like them for their appearance or other things, especially in the main cast. If I have a strong vision for the plot but there's someone who ends up not serving it well, I usually turn them into minor or secondary characters, or integrate the ideas I liked into someone that could use more depth. Keeping the cast as clean as I can helps to make sure that I'm not cluttering the themes behind that story by introducing irrelevant elements, since every character will have their own interests that drive the story forward.
Characters can change as you write the story out, so I try to ask myself on a consistent basis if the character's development has a through line that fits the ideas I want to express. If the answer is no, I'll think about if the overarching plot is more important to me (in that case, tweak the character) or if the character's direction matters more (rethink themes).
If I'm coming up with a story for the sake of giving a random character somewhere to belong, I take a look at my past experiences and things that I enjoy to build their narrative. I usually don't write stories with a large scope like saving a fantasy world for example, since I'm not as into worldbuilding as a lot of others and it wouldn't be fun for me to think about (but it may be for you and sometimes I wish I was a little more like that).
To get myself interested in a character and to start thinking of them more as a person, I'll usually start with coming up with general demeanor, a personal struggle I want to explore, and some miscellaneous facts that I want to include. From there, I start to think further on those things by imagining what it'd be like to navigate through your everyday life like that.
For example, a character that I've been developing is cheerful, but pretty clumsy and absentminded. While those traits can be presented as endearing, a question that comes up is how that character would internalize being known as that. Are people annoyed by them or do they see it as something they can't help? Would the character brush it off and take it in stride, or think of themself as someone who messes up all the time? How much do the opinions of others matter to them in the first place? How long has it mattered to them, if it does? If it's only mattered to them recently, did something happen to cause that? If I go through this process with enough basic ideas, I'll usually end up with a character that I'm attached to on some level, which is the personal goal for me in this instance.
Palettes are entirely up to personal preference. When I make designs, I try to come up with characters that I enjoy drawing! Though since they usually have some sort of concept behind them, I find that they rarely end up having an aesthetic identity that fully aligns with my own. I usually don't mind this though - I want all of them to have at least some differences in taste between them! Still, I definitely do end up with some more common elements than others. Brown eyes comes to mind, as well as black and pink hair. The colors in my artwork in general lean more warm than cool, so that's also reflected in their designs.
If they're part of the story, I also want to make sure that the characters have a fairly cohesive look. They don't need to have the same tastes at all, but I try to give them the same level of detail or some unifying element to really make them feel like part of one cast.
Do you do commissions? Totally asking for a friend π
I do every once in a while! It's unintentionally become a bit of an annual thing. I make posts announcing the date and time that slots are meant to open beforehand on my accounts though!
I'm working on a project that requires art, and I'm having a lot of trouble staying motivated, alongside trying to improve my people drawing skills. To you have any tips for staying motivated and improving?
The thing that I try to encourage the most when it comes to improvement is to find a way to enjoy yourself. Whether it be part of the process or a subject that you like, drawing on a consistent basis will help you iterate more, which will help you improve.
When it comes to projects/work/anything of the type, motivation can often be hard to find. My schedule is tighter than it used to be, so I end up drawing even if I'm not particularly in the mood to do it, and it's become a habit more than anything.
If you have certain deadlines you want to meet, it's generally better to work off discipline, a schedule, or really anything that gets you to work that isn't motivation alone. This has taken me a really long time (years and years) to develop though and I still find myself being slow when my calendar fills up, so if it's difficult then you don't need to beat yourself up over it! That's part of the reason why I try to underline having fun the most, since it'll help you passively develop a sense of routine with drawing without having to necessarily force yourself to pick up the pen - even if it's small doodles or things that are unrelated, I think it's helpful for your development to want to draw no matter what it is.
Also, when it comes to personal projects, I have a lot of things that I'm excited about. I talk a lot in private, and something that helps motivate me is being able to show my friends what I've made and seeing what they think. So instead of just talking about my ideas and trying to get a sense of satisfaction from that alone, I purposefully hold back what I share through words so I can get their reaction from what I've actually gotten done instead. I have a whole part one of a VN that I've kept for example that I haven't uploaded anywhere, since I want to polish it some more before providing a public product.
This ended up being pretty long and is mostly a personal experience thing, but I hope it helps at least a little!
