With Tumblr beginning to implode upon itself, I figure now is about as good a time as any to log off for good.
This was meant to be sort of a catch-all blog where I posted my thoughts on the superhero genre as a whole, and it ended up becoming a constant uphill battle to convert people on a couple of unpopular movies (specifically the DCEU), which the studio itself gave up on and more or less threw us under the bus. Since then, the fandom which I engaged with the most has dried up on this platform, and most of the remaining conversations have been rehashing old points from years ago. Being on the losing side of the Marvel/DC brand war not only demoralized me as a DC fan, but also soured my ability to enjoy the Marvel movies, so now instead of being able to dive into every corner of the genre, I find myself struggling to get into any of it at all.
On a larger scale, this place has really stopped being fun. Thereâs so little that seems to be actually created here, only reposted memes, gif sets, links to peopleâs YouTube channels, and long-winded catty rants responding to someone elseâs long-winded catty rant. To say nothing of the foaming-at-the-mouth hostility towards anyone who questions or (God forbid) disagrees with the prevailing social/political orthodoxy among the siteâs users.
Will the Red Cape Diaries return? Probably. Iâve got accounts elsewhere that I havenât really been doing anything with: a YouTube channel Iâve been sitting on, an old Wordpress account, a Twitter I never use because that platform is even more hive-minded and spiritually sick than here, and even an account on Gab that I havenât touched because I have no idea if that platform will even still exist for long. Point is, Iâve got places I can go, and perhaps starting fresh on a new platform will reinvigorate my desire to write, my convictions to express my beliefs, and my enthusiasm for the things I enjoy.
If I do start back up somewhere else, Iâll let you know. Til then, I leave you with a quote from one of my all-time favorite comics, Grant Morrisonâs Flex Mentallo:
âBeing cleverâs a fine thing. But sometimes, a boy just needs to get out of the house and meet some girls.â
This is Andy C. of the Red Cape Diaries, signing off.
