Video Sharing and YouTube!
Since its inception in 2005, YouTube has made great strides in video sharing. The designers had in mind a platform to enable people share their videos with the world. The site attracted investors and before long, it was very popular. Google later bought the website for $1.65 billion in 2006.
The scope of videos on YouTube has grown as the site continues to gain popularity. From the early crazy stunts, pranks and videos of interesting locations, today there are a myriad of videos of varying content including, TV shows, presidential debates, musical performances and instructional material. You will also find uncensored war footage, home videos of funny happenings, music videos and promotional videos for products including advertisements. Anything goes into YouTube as long as it is a video.
Video Sharing: To upload videos onto YouTube, you just need;
A Google account and then sign in to YouTube. You will then select a video to upload and you are set. You can optionally record a video directly from your webcam or create a slideshow of videos.
There are privacy settings for the videos you upload. Tags, descriptions and titles can be added to the posted videos. You have the option of also posting the video on other Google platforms and social media such as twitter, Facebook and Google+.
Add the thumbnails and put it on a playlist if you choose.
Your subscribers can be notified about the new video or if you choose, they will not be.
The final step once you are satisfied that the video is ready for all to view is clicking on the publish button. If you do not publish it, the video will not be visible to the public.
Once the video is uploaded, you will receive a notification in your email. There is the option of forwarding this email to friends so that they too can view the video. There is the option of opting out of these emails.
The ease of publishing videos on YouTube has led to controversy being stirred. There are both copyright issues and social issues pertaining to morality and ease of governance in maintaining social order. The way videos are viewed by users on the site and their ranking has also attracted criticism from a large bulk of the YouTube community.
In copyright infringement, there are numerous cases where YouTube users have posted videos that are parts of movies, music videos and TV shows without express permission from the owners of these videos. This is copyrighted material that requires consent to be given for sharing and spreading of the videos to happen. This happens thousands of times on a daily basis as YouTube does not have a pre-screening of the videos before they are posted and appear on the website.
Another controversy is one running within the YouTube community itself. The big corporations have the capacity to get their videos onto the top of lists in the website using various methods such as paying for it and partnerships with the website itself. These include CNN, the NFL, BBC, CBS, NBC and celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey and Tyra Banks. They also have large subscription lists. There have also been accusations of these corporations using their large budgets and even underhanded methods to push out the other smaller YouTube contributors.
The other controversy is with governments of various countries. A practical case is where the government of Turkey blocked out access to YouTube in late March, 2014 due to its contribution in fueling social unrest. It becomes easy for people to share hate speech and anti-government material with the freedom and anonymity afforded by YouTube. Some of the information passed around may be wrong and with an aim to just stir people into discontent. In as much as it is an infringement on the freedom of expression, governments have a role to maintain law and order for the good of its citizens. The government of Turkey removed the block on YouTube in the country in June the same year but the question of whether YouTube should be allowed to have anti-government video content still remains.
It is a great thing and an avenue for expression of the freedom to information and free expression that YouTube gives people. The controversies that have arisen however threaten the video sharing site and need to be addressed before they lead to its fall or the rise of competitors for YouTube. In the meantime, let us go on expressing ourselves and enjoying the anonymity and freedom offered by YouTube.

It is commonly known and proven by several studies (Amazon) that a slow website with large visitor volumes with a delay of as much as 100 milliseconds can lead to a decrease of 1% in turnover. In these studies they only investigated the influence of plain loading times. Despite the fact that there are a lot more factors that influence conversion rates and turnover.
Problems in the Online Transaction Process
All webmasters and website owners do their utmost best to have a fast loading website. With a fast loading website, our visitors stay on our website and wonât abandon in the early phases. However, it is shown by a study of Tealeaf and Harris Interactive that on a yearly basis a stunning amount of 44 billion dollars are lost because of problems in the online transaction processes of websites.
A sum up of their findings:
32% of your visitors will abandon your shopping cart and website when one of the steps in your online transaction process is having problems
1 out of 5 visitors will abandon your shopping cart if the different steps on your website are loading to slow
A delay of 2 seconds in the first step (in a process of 5 steps) results in a decrease of 60% of conversions
A delay of 2 seconds in the third step (in a process of 5 steps) results in a drop of 55% of conversions
A complaint of a single visitor will create an âecho chamber effectâ on Social Media.
Based on these findings it is clear that an unoptimized online transaction process could lead to a serious loss of conversions and hence turnover. But where do you look for possible problems, and even more important root causes?
Problems and Causes:
Third Parties
A lot of websites make use of services from third parties for several purposes. For instance Credit Card authorization and address validation are often implemented scripts from third parties. This means that in the online transaction process on your own website your are completely dependent on the performance of external services.
Hence, be sure to only use reliable third party services and be sure to check their Service Level Agreements before you start working with them. Even more important be sure to make use of a Website Monitoring service with Transaction monitoring functionalities. With these services you can monitor all the different steps on uptime, loading times which allows you to continuously monitor the performance of the process.
Internal Search Engines, Log-in and Forms
Many websites use internal search engines to offer their visitors the opportunity to find what they are looking for. However, more often than not, these search engines arenât properly working or not working at all. Secondly, on a lot of websites it is required to log-in before you can make an online transaction. If your Log-in functionalities for any reason isnât working you have a serious problem. The same goes for simple registration forms.
In a normal situation you wonât notice any problems with these forms or log-in functionalities yourself since you arenât a customer. Mostly, you will notice problems because of complaints from potential customers on Social Media or through your support center (when the damage is already done). You can prevent all these problems by pro-actively monitoring all the consecutive steps of your online transaction process.
Usage of HTTPS/SSL
Other problems can occur with the usage of HTTPS pages. Of course, the check-out process of your online shop should be safe, but sometimes for this safety you pay a serious price. The encryption and decryption of these pages take a lot of time (more time than HTTP pages). To increase the loading time of these pages you should make sure the pages are cashed by the browser.
Expired SSL Certificate
Another serious risk of using HTTPS pages is the possibility of expiration of your SSL certificates. Where the HTTPS pages are intended to create safety, a screen as displayed in the image will only create problems. You can prevent this by using SSL certificate expiration monitoring.
Concluding
We now know that a malfunctioning online transaction process could lead to an abandonment rate of 32% and that with a delay of 2 seconds your conversion can drop with 60%. To prevent this the first thing you should do is start monitoring the online transaction process, and start optimizing the performance of all the individual steps. Test all the options with A/B testing and only use the highly necessary steps in the process. Whenever problems do occur, you can immediately take action because you will be alerted by your monitoring service.
Good luck!

Protecting Your Password
Protecting Your Password
Thatâs exactly what they want, itâs your password! In todayâs digital world security is unfortunately not a foresight set in the minds of most users. People donât really think about how secure their IPads, Blackberryâs or Androids are because they donât know any better. They think because theyâve downloaded a free antivirus app online for their laptop that they donât need to worry about being hacked. Regrettably this false sense of security is what gets people into a lot of trouble, and allows the opportunity for hackers to steal peopleâs lives.
The Weakest Link â You and Your Password!
The human component is always the weakest link in any security setup. That means you are your own worst enemy.  Security has to be a way of everyday thinking, not just something you download once and forget about. âYou and Your Passwordâ are the barrier that hackers are looking to break. Once they have access to your password(s) its game over. If you do any online banking, and a hacker obtains your banking password they can do so much damage to your life, itâs unreal.
A smart hacker isnât just going to take your money, now that they have access without you knowing, they are going to open credit cards in your name, purchase items online, apply for loans, and gain access to all your personal information that the bank has on youâŚÂ All because they now know your password!
Never share your password with anyone!
Important Tips to Protect Your Secure Password
Public Access Computers (Cyber CafĂŠâs / Libraries / Hotels): Never log into anything sensitive that requires a password on a public access computer. If you do, you are just inviting trouble through the front door. It doesnât matter if itâs a Cyber CafĂŠ, or the Public Library â computers in public areas may have malware and/or spyware on them that would record everything you type, every webpage you visit and ever document you open (and then some)!
Unsecured Wi-Fi Connections: Never enter passwords or other sensitive information when using an âUnsecured Wi-Fi Connectionâ. Any data transmitted over these unsecured Wi-Fi networks can be captured by hackers without you ever knowing. How do you know if the network you are on is unsecured? Easy, if the network you just joined didnât require you to enter a password to get on it, well then, it is unsecure.
I would even be weary of Wi-Fi connections at coffee shops that do require a password for their Wi-Fi network. Reason being⌠that password is now shared by 100âs (if not more) of other people. Whoâs to say that someone on that network isnât monitoring all the data being transferred? Just remember that if anyone can access it, password or not, then itâs not secure connection by any means.
âRemember Me?â â Well Donât! Never use the âremember meâ feature on websites and found within most apps. All it takes is for you to forget and walk away or even worse lose your device (or have it stolen). If that happens then whoever has it now can easily login to any of those âRemember Meâ accounts! Dohh!
Building a Strong / Secure Password
- Never include personal information in any of the passwords you create! - Change your password frequently, it keeps them guessing. - The longer the better⌠make sure your password is at least eight characters long with upper and lower case letters, as well include numbers, special characters and/or even spaces if the system allows it, remember the longer the better. - Always use different passwords for different accounts, most people use the same one password for all their online accounts. Always ensure high-value websites such as your online banking account password is unique and not shared with any other account you own. - Never share your password with anyone, not friends, not family, not anyone. - Always make sure you have your mobile Bluetooth turned OFF! - Always ensure your mobile device is password protected and locked.
Most Popular Passwords Used by People in 2012!
These passwords are the current most popular passwords used in 2012 by users online in comparison to passwords used by users in 2011. If your password is in this list or resembles anything close to any password in this list, then you need to change it right away! I mean it, right away! Why you ask? Well because these passwords below are at the top of every hackers password dictionary database, these passwords you see here are the 1st ones hackers try to gain access with, so if you see yours here, delete and make a new one.

Does Your Password Pass The Test?
Sometimes when you set a password a âpassword meterâ appears telling you if your password is weak, medium, or strong. Always make sure your password is strong or above. Never set a weak password, weak passwords can usually be broken within a matter of seconds.
Here are a couple of websites for you to test your password strength. I do advise however that you be careful with sites such as these as some of these sites are setup to steal your passwords. Never put the actual password you use into one of these sites, but putting something similar however is alright. Using sites like these will help you to understand how quickly passwords you use can be broken, and help you to build a habit of creating stronger passwords all together.
Recommended Links (Sites to Test Your Password Strength):

This site helps you generate a more secure password and can tell you if your current password doesnât match up to security standards.
Strength Test: http://rumkin.com/tools/password/passchk.php
This site gives a little more descriptive info on what the difference between weak, medium, strong and very strong passwords are, as well as a more in-depth breakdown of your current passwords.
How Secure Is My Password: http://howsecureismypassword.net/
I enjoy this site the most, as it tells you how quickly someone will break your password as well as inform you of your mistakes for creating the current password. Keep in mind however that some code breakers are better than others, so in this image 17 thousand years is more an estimate than a prediction.
Password Meter: http://www.passwordmeter.com/
The password meter website gives the most detail about how to secure your password, it is a great tool to learn from.
Microsoft Security: http://www.microsoft.com/canada/protect/protect-yourself/identity-theft/article.aspx?article=Check-your-password-is-it-strong
As all things Microsoft â this site does not tell you much. The last time this was updated was 2010, so be wary.
Protecting Your Password Recap!
Learn to always make it a habit to think in terms of security. Never share your password with anyone, and always be aware of how and when you input sensitive information into a device. Whether it is at the Public Library, a Cyber CafĂŠ, or at a friendâs house? Wi-Fi connections you may think are secure could be compromised at anytime.  Also donât be afraid to utilize tools you can find online to better educate yourself about better security practices. Knowing more about what makes you at risk, helps you better prepare and avoid having your password, and your life stolen.
I hope this article helps.

Google Pong Game Discovered within Google Adsense!
Google Pong Game Hidden In Plain View!
I love Google; they always have something fun and interesting going on somewhere, somehow with something. If itâs a not cute and funny animated Google Doodle, itâs an amazing car that drives itself or Google maps that you can actually view on street level, glasses you wear that can access the internet or a search option that speaks back to you with voice commands. Even the Google haters canât deny Googleâs creativity, and sometimes itâs the smallest thing that I blows me away that Google will do, such as today I discovered a Google Pong Game in my Google Adsense account. Sweet!!!
Scratch that I should say my 6 year old nephew found Google Pong in my Google Adsense. What a smart kid he isâŚ
Google Pong Game Another Google Easter Egg!
Yes, you read it right! There is an old school pong game in every Google Adsense account! Itâs actually kind of hidden but laid out in plain sight, this is what is known as an âVirtual Easter Eggâ. It is a called âVirtual Easter Eggâ because it is an intentional hidden message, hidden feature, or inside joke placed in a website, movie, book, CD, video game, computer program etc. etc⌠well you get the idea. Why do people put in âVirtual Easter Eggsâ in books, DVDâs, websites, etc.? Well because itâs FUN and makes whatever it is that you are using/viewing/playing that much more interesting.
Google Pong Game â Google Ads celebrate 10 years of success!

Play the Google Pong Game!
To access the Google Pong game in your Google Adsense account simply login and make sure that you are on the HOME tab in the top left hand corner (it should automatically take you there when you first login). Next you will see at the bottom of the left hand corner a large yellow 10 with a birthday hat on it, this graphic is the hidden door way to the Google pong game.
You must hover your mouse over the yellow 10 â but DO NOT click on it. If you click on it â it will open another page that will take you to the Google Ad celebration page (away from the pong game). You will see right away as your mouse hovers over the yellow 10 that below it a green bar will begin to load.
Find the Google Pong Game hidden within Google Adsense
Start playing Google Pong! 1st one to 10 points WINS!
Once the green bar reaches 100% (approx. 3-5 seconds depending on your connection speed) the Google Adsense page will fade out a little and the Pong Game will display over top. To begin the game click the left mouse button and the first one to reach 10 points wins the game. Obviously you can only play against the computer, and at first the pong ball that goes back and forth super slow, but as the scoring increases so does the speed of the ball. By the time you play your second game to 10 points the pong ball goes lightning fast! I have only tested out if the game works or not in Firefox and Google Chrome (please let us know if you are using a different browser and if it works or not via our comments section?)
Pretty Cool if you ask me! Funny thing about it is⌠Iâve seen that yellow 10 graphic there for weeks now in the bottom left hand corner, but it was my 6 year old nephew that discovered the pong game hidden within it after only viewing it for about 5 seconds.
Google Pong Recap!!
How to play the Google Pong Game!
Login to your Google Adsense Account.
Tested using Firefox and Google Chrome (please let us know if you are using a different browser and if it works or not?)
Make sure you are on the Google Home tab!
Hover your mouse over the Yellow 10 at the bottom of the page. (Do NOT Click).
Allow the green loading bar to load (3-5 seconds).
Game will start â click left mouse button to begin the game.
All Games go to 10 Points.

Favicon.ico How To Create Your Own Favicons!
What is a Favicon?
A favicon is a tiny bookmark icon that is captured by your browser from a specific file on your website called a favicon.ico which is a16x16 icon. You can usually see it displayed right beside the website address in the URL bar. However, depending on which type of browser you are using it can be seen a few different ways. Usually it sits at the top left corner of your browser tab(s). The favicon is also the icon image (.ico file) that is displayed when you create browser pin tabs and/or bookmark any web page (in your bookmarks folder or toolbar).
Why Have a Favicon.ico On My Website?
A favicon.ico is a great way to help brand your website, and is used specifically for that purpose. It also helps visitors quickly find your site in future when theyâve bookmarked your webpage and helps your web address (web link) to your web page stand out in their vast see of other bookmarks.
A favicon is a bookmark icon that is capture by your browser to help users visually identify (also brands) your website apart from others.
How Do I Create My Own Favorite Icons = Favicons?
Creating your very own favorite icon is actually quite is easy to do. Searching for âHow to generate a Faviconâ in Google will bring up many different websites that offer the tools on how to generate a free favicons directly from your computer. Most of these auto generating websites out there can produce very poor quality icons, so be sure to try more than just one just to be sure. At least until you find the one that works best for what you are looking to accomplish in terms of quality.
Personally I like to use www.convertico.com as it is quick and easy to use, and produces high quality .ico files in a variety of different sizes of my choosing. It also doesnât have a lot of added options to make it confusing (as some favicon generating sites do), you just upload the file you want to convert as your favicon.ico file, click submit, and download your file in a matter of seconds. Itâs that simple, itâs that quick and yes itâ that easy.
Another added bonus of using www.convertico.com is that it also generates icons that I can utilize as windows desktop icons.
If you are an avid WordPress user you can also download a simple plugin that will automatically create your favicon files for you, as well as have the added ability to create specialty favicon formats necessary for a high quality favicon when people save your website when they use their IPADS and/or other mobile devices. (Part 2 of this article will tap into the more in-depth variety I am currently speaking of).
WordPress users can download this favicon plugin I am referring too by clicking here, it is called the All-In-One-Favicon and works great â I use it for all my WordPress websites.
What Browsers Support Favicons?
Pretty much all modern web browsers out there today (ie: Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera, Safari, Internet Explorer and others) support favicons as a feature. Even mobile browsers support the favicon feature such as iPhones/iPads, Blackberry and Android etc.
Generate your own Favicon
How to Install My Favicon.ico File?
Installing your favicon is fairly simple to do⌠after you have gone to www.convertico.com and created your own personal favicon.ico file, downloaded it and unzipped it, you need to open your FTP program and navigate to your website root directory (your root directory is where your index file is located) and upload it.
Next you need to open your webpage(s), or your header file and between your <head> and </head> tags enter the following piece of code:
<link rel=âshortcut iconâ href=âfavicon.icoâ>
This tells the browser where your favicon.ico file is located and what to do with it. If for some reason you donât see your favicon file right away, you will need to clear out your browser cache files and revisit your website; this will usually correct the issue.
.ico Recap!
A favicon is a bookmark icon that is capture by your browser to help users visually identify (also brands) your website apart from others. This is especially useful when users have many bookmarks in their browser favoriteâs folders.

Lorem Ipsum - A Web Publishers Tool! Part 1
<!-- google_ad_client = "ca-pub-1453894888705986"; /* 300x250 Medium Rectangle */ google_ad_slot = "3357079143"; google_ad_width = 300; google_ad_height = 250; //-->
Lorem Ipsum â Say what now?
My clients often ask me⌠âWhy did you put strange Latin textâŚâ on the web design mockup I just sent them? âWell, Good Question!â I tell them and then I explain that itâs actually a publishing tool that web developers and graphic designers use called Lorem Ipsum.
Lorem Ipsum is used as dummy text (if you will) for filler on a graphic design to visually show where actual content will go eventually in its place â opposed to using âText Hereâ or âContent Hereâ which visually does nothing for the eye. We all know when first dealing with a new prospective client, you donât always receive the actual content for a project until a design has been agreed upon. Thatâs where Lorem Ipsum comes in handy, because it can be quickly generated to suit any length of text necessary that you may need for any design.
Horrible example of demonstrating content on a page to a potential client!
Great example of Lorem Ipsum content being used!
Where does Lorem Ipsum come from?
Lorem Ipsum has actually been used as dummy/filler text in the print industry since the 1500s. Lorem Ipsum may look random, but technically speaking itâs not. My client was on to something when he asked why I wrote âstrange Latinâ in my mockup and thatâs because it has roots in a piece of classical literature written in Latin from around 45 BC. That would make it 2000+ years old!
Now thatâs incredible!
How to Generate Lorem Ipsum text?
There are many Lorem Ipsum generators online that you can find easily if you search the internet. The site I like to use is www.lipsum.com.  On www.lipsum.com you can generate Lorem Ipsum by paragraph, by words, by bytes, or by bullet points/lists. Which is pretty much everything youâll ever need. However, as an added bonus www.lipsum.com will even allow you to even generate mockups of different Lorem Ipsum banner sizes. You can choose from 3 different types of colours, ranging in the entire industry standard for banner sizes. These are perfect for any web project one may have, and generating content this way saves time on your part. It will also make your design proposals look as they should by visually communicating how a clientâs site should look with actual content. Instead of making your clients guess for themselves where text will be written or banners will be placed.
www.lipsum.com also has quick and easy to use plugins available for a range of other tools.

Firefox Add-on
