Marquis, 1998
As far as anyone can tell, it was on this day 200 years ago that Mary Shelley woke from her nightmare and declared:
‘I’ve found it! What will terrify me will terrify others. I need only describe the spectre which had haunted my midnight pillow.’
That spectre inspired her to write Frankenstein; or, the Modern Prometheus. Pictured above is a sketch by Percy Shelley of Lake Geneva, where Mary was staying with both him and Lord Byron at the Villa Diodati. It was Byron who, on a stormy candlelit night, suggested that they each try and write a ghost story.
We also have two volumes of Shelley’s draft of Frankenstein which you can leaf through for free on our website!

Jewish Betrothal Ring
17th or 19th Century
It is difficult to date and localize the large, ornamented rings that were created for use in synagogues during the wedding ritual. However, there is ample evidence that examples such as this one were exchanged during Italian Jewish weddings. The groom would place it on the bride’s finger, but after the ceremony the ring would have been kept as a prized memento by either the family or the temple community. The gable roof (perhaps symbolizing the Temple of Jerusalem) opens to reveal the words “Good Luck.”
