the blooming court and its rot-queen, dark-eyed and petal-lipped, veined with the richness of honey and carcasses. she lives off fruit and nectar and flowers and meats, and poison-bright butterflies flutter about the train of her gown — a garment of thorny ribbons and dewy leaves and too-ripe roses, shimmering with the iridescence of snake scales and beetle shells. the blooming queen likes to hold extravagant feasts, filling the air with a heady repugnance; the festivities last all through the night, there among enormous knots of roots, each gnarl of wood as large as a hillside. swarms of insects gather overhead, like garlands of winged flowers come to life: drawn to the crowds and the slaughter alike, and picking their way through the remains of devoured creatures to feed the bloom anew.
