Alright, I thought this blog was dead but I'm going to go into this. "Programming isn't magic spells" is literally the stupidest take I have ever heard. Computer science, at its extent, and in its essence, quite literally about figuring out magic spells.

Computer Science is about what knowledge is, how to discover it efficiently, and how to teach a computer how to Know Things. And the art of computer science is about how to make those attempts at knowledge faster and more efficient. It lives at the edge of exploiting mathematics to make fictional ideas a reality, and it does so everyday. It does so as I type this, as I scry to find the fastest path to the local grocery store, as I explain how a compiler pass can be written in one-fifth the code while being more efficient and cleaner to maintain. What is magic? If you define magic is breaking the laws of thermodynamics (read: evocation), then I suppose you're right that computer science can't do that. But it can do illusion, and divination, and if you own a 3d printer it can even do conjuration. Minor abjuration is even on the table, frankly. Why does it matter if I can explain all of the components, and all of the details are real and tangible? Okay. Why do you think in stories that wizards go to school?

I have tomes of knowledge on a shelf that describe the reality of truth, and how to find it efficiently. They describe how to do so in applied ways, automatically, and to the point that it allows us to interact on these stupid glowing rectangles. Which part, in particular, is not magic? "It's just a recipe?" It isn't, not for a new tool, not building it the first time, not building custom ones. It's imagination and invention and math, applied and running to make something incredible.
