History: Lili is the older—by two minutes—twin of Eva Cole. After twins, their mother called it quits in the pregnancy department, so they are one another’s only siblings. They had a good home life, if a little conservative; their Irish-American father was particularly Catholic and so the girls did go to a private Catholic school growing up. Their mother was less conservative, but only by enough to make her a suitable go-between from the girls to their father. There was a lot of laughter and childhood memories were warm for Lili. The girls tended to associate primarily with one another: it was like they were each other’s built-in best friend: Lili felt like the only person in the world who could ever understand her was her sister Eva. They did everything together and saw little need for other friends, though they loved to interact and pretend each was the other, even fooling their parents at times. Lili preferred ballet while Eva enjoyed soccer, but both learned from the other and had no problems posing as each other for school or extracurriculars, often ‘slipping into’ one another’s lives for a sense of escape.

As they grew, their parents remained the same but how the girls processed their relationship with them changed. What was endearing and loving as children became smothering and overprotective as they grew. Their mother always wanted the best for them in life, the best possible future, which of course meant heavy emphasis on grades. This sometimes meant forgoing other social activities that the twins enjoyed. Lili didn’t like to have her freedoms taken away from her—she liked to do what she wanted—so she learned to work within her mother’s rules. Paper to be done before she could go out? That paper was so done yesterday. Needed an A in Biology in order for her father to buy her that leather jacket she’d been eyeing? Done and done. Learning came easy to her and she enjoyed it, but some of the fun was removed when her mother kept pushing her. Lili knew she did it out of love, though, so it was hard to resent her parents. The harder Lili worked, the more she could do, and she made sure that she worked hard enough to never miss anything. Of course, that left little personal time for herself and she often felt burnt-out and stressed. Her resume for college looked bloody amazing, though.

Lili knew that her sister had stopped going to classes, but she wasn’t her twin’s keeper and would never rat on Eva to their folks. So what if Eva was a little lost? Lili knew her twin like she knew herself: Eva always landed on her feet, and besides, Eva knew that Lili would always be there to help if she needed it. When Eva told Lili about her boyfriend, though, Lili was a little surprised—partly because boyfriends had never even crossed Lili’s mind at that point. Lili just didn’t have time for something like that, and for some reason, she’d edited that possibility out of her worldview. But now that Eva had one, Lili felt a little jealous. Like there were things in life that Lili didn’t have access to, no matter how hard she was working. No amount of As would win her a boyfriend, but she couldn’t bring herself to disappoint her parents, or to drop any of her extracurriculars. She had been the lead in the school musical for three years; she had ballet to do; she volunteered on a self-harm hotline; she was part of the Art Club; she was class Treasurer; she worked part-time at the local movie theater. What could Lili possibly give up?

At least in this, Lili could live vicariously through her sister and hear all of the stories, and so she covered for Eva’s antics as Eva slipped out of the house and any and all hours to do heaven knows what. Lili let her mind roam at these times, the times she spent lying to her parents, the times she laid awake at night exhausted but unable to sleep, head spinning. Lili let herself imagine all the things she might do and be if she were someone else. But she wasn’t someone else: she was herself and these were the choices she was making in the life she’d been given, and in the morning she’d do it all over again. Lili just cared too much about her parents’ opinions and about her future to throw it all away, despite the pressure she felt and how much she envied Eva’s carefree ways. Then, there was the night that there was an irreparable rift in the twins’ relationship. Eva told Lili that her boyfriend had turned her into a werecat. At first, Lili had laughed, thinking it was a joke, but as Eva explained, Lili grew more and more envious. It was just one more thing that Eva had handed to her, that she had never worked for. Something more fabulous than Lili could ever have, that no amount of school or work or volunteering could earn her. 

She begged Eva to make her a werecat, too. They were twins: they should do everything together, share everything, like they always had. Eva was having trouble being a werecat and Lili promised they could go through it together. It broke Lili’s heart when Eva refused. In a way, Lili felt betrayed and also exiled from Eva’s world. She shut herself off from her twin for a time, so utterly hurt and frustrated by her sister’s insensitivity. Couldn’t Eva understand that Lili needed this? Which was when Lili realized she wasn’t really happy in her life. All the things she’d done were based on others’ expectations for her, not ever anything she’d really weighed and considered for herself. Always what would “be best” for her, for her future. But what if the future never came? That was the time Lili changed. She did only what she wanted, when she wanted. If it didn’t make her happy, she didn’t do it. Lili became more selfish, more rebellious, doing anything and everything just for the experience. Her senior year, she tried everything from cocaine to Buddhist retreats just to do it. Lili was hellbent on learning from experience, now, and not just from books. After high school graduation, she realized how she could merge her desires with Eva’s: they should leave Boston in search of help, in search of answers, whether or not their parents allowed it. The two left their lives behind to “explore the world” before college, but the truth of the matter is that they’ve been at it for 3 years without much progress… but then again, they only just got to Pickens.
