Santa Muerte (fully âNuestra SeĂąora de la Santa Muerteâ) is a Mexican folk saint. She most likely of sycretic figure, created in equal parts from the Aztec goddess Mictecacihuatl, the Virgin Mary, and the Grim Reaper. She is consistently depicted as a skeleton in robes carrying a scythe. Santa Muerte is especially revered by the poor and homeless, prostitutes, taxi drivers, and career criminals, and is considered the patron saint of LGBT Mexicans. She is also known as âla Dama Poderosaâ,âla Flaquitaâ, âla Hermana Blancaâ, âla Huesudaâ, âla Madrinaâ, âla NiĂąa Blancaâ, âSanta Sebastianaâ, âSeĂąora Blancaâ, âSeĂąora Negra", and âSeĂąora de las Sombrasâ.
⨠5 types of witches â¨
Thereâs been a high rise of new people with an interest for paganism, wicca and all things witchcraft over the last couple years, but while stylized Tarot cards and light-catching crystals are perfect tools, the shift from an intrigued observer to practicing wiccan or pagan can be a daunting one. So why not start the process by determining which brand of witchery resonates with you?
Read and learn about five specialized takes on witchcraft;
Cosmic Witch
Cosmic witches will often incorporate planetary and celestial energy into their practices and spellwork. They feel a personal, spiritual and emotional connection with with the planets in our solar system, but thatâs not the limit- some also feel this with asteroids, meteors, supernovas, stars, constellations, galaxies, as well as black holes! These witches will pay attention to the finer details of astrology, horoscopes, and zodiac signsâbut thatâs only the surface of how the cosmic forces influence the individual. They focus on how celestial energy influences the inner self, people around them and the world.
Cosmic witches have been around since the study of planets. According to the American Federation of Astrologers, they used their astrological charts to predict the ârecurrence of seasons and certain celestial events.â Around 2000 BC. Babylonian astrologers believed that the sun, moon, and the five known planets at the time all had distinct character traits.
Divination Witch
A divination witch uses their magick to try to predict the future, to find guidance and to have questions answered, often by using a variety of toolsâor one that resonates with them personally. There are so many various mediums with which you can connect into the magick of the world; Tarot cards, oracle cards, pendulums, palmistry, and tasseography, and more.
Divination as well as divination witches have existed in nearly about every time period in history. In ancient Greece, these witches were known as Oracles, and it was believed that deities spoke to them / through them.
Green Witch
A green witch works with magickal properties found in the natural world around us. Their craft is based on respecting nature and all living things. Green witches focus on the magickal meanings and uses of herbs, plants, and flowers. This incorporates herbalism; The use of plants intended for medicinal purposes, into their practice.
Herbalism is found in many cultures, ancient and not. In some parts of Africa, a herb called purslane was used for cleansing during and after rituals, while in some Scandinavian countries, clover was used to ward off evils spirits and help develop psychic ability! In folk magic, chamomile is said to bring luck.
Kitchen Witch
A kitchen witch incorporates their magick practices into their cooking, usually within their own home. Their magic is not based on any divine power or spiritual guidance, but in the magic that can be found in everyday life. Their craft shines brightest while cooking and baking, by using the power of their own intentions.
Witchcraft and cooking have always come hand-in-hand. Our classic image of a witch has always persisted as a woman stirring her cauldron and there has always been a magical and ritualistic nature surrounding food, like in green witchcraft, kitchen witches use herbalism in their food-based magickâbut kitchen witchery isnât just about food! It can also be making a homemade offering to a deity, or even cleansing and protection your home!
Sea Witch
sea witches, also known as a water witches, work with the element water in order to connect with their magic. They feel a deep, powerful connection to the waterâwhether its the ocean, sea, or just a lake or pond, this powerful pull towards the water leads them to be more aware of their own magickal energies.
Sea witches have been found in many cultures throughout history, however, sea witches have a even deeper history in mythology. In Norse mythology, these witches were magickal, malevolent feminine spirits who often took the form of mermaids like creatures. These witches believe their power and bond with the sea and its tides was born from their worship to the moon. The triple goddess symbol holds particularly deep meaning for sea witches, as it represents the three phases of the monthly lunar cycle: waxing, full, and waning, of which effect the tides most.

Lavender Syrup!
I know there are a ton of recipes out there, but this one's mine. I put in a lot more lavender personally.
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 1/2 cup water (here's an opportunity to use moon water for extra energy. Full moon water can boost the lavender correspondences for psychic awareness and love, while water charged in phases leading up to the new moon can boost lavender's ability to banish/protect from depression and anxiety)

Warm the water and sugar, mixing till it dissolves, then add the lavender and mix well. When the water is boiling, lower it to simmer, cover, and let it simmer for about 10-15 minutes. If you leave it for longer, it will become bitter. Then strain into a bottle, and THEN add the food coloring if you want. đż leave out an offering (food, drink, flowers) for the local spirits near the fire.
âď¸ play music or sing and dance around the fire (naked is good). empty your mind and let there only be music.
đż speak a prayer to your ancestors. ask, if you have questions.
âď¸ Listen to the sounds of nature in silence.
đż put off the fire before leaving the spot.
Quick note: Do not work with deities from closed cultures if youâre not from said culture. Itâs not cool, everybody.Â
Card One: Introductions
Fairly straightforward. This card is the deity introducing themself. This is the stage where you should verify and make certain you know who youâre working with.
Card Two: Shaking Hands
This card represents the deityâs first impression of you. What energy are you bringing to the table? What do they see when they look into you?
Card Three: Have We Met?
Has this deity had their eye(s) on you? Is this their first time youâve piqued their interest, or have they hung around since childhood? Some deities may refuse to answer this question or redirect.Â
Card Four: The Nature
The general tone of your relationship. This is a general feeling that both you and the deity bring to the table.
Card Five: Before I GoâŚÂ
What advice or wisdom does the deity have to impart on you? This could be a nod of encouragement, a stern talking to, or even just a casual shrug.Â
Card Six: In The End
The ultimate outcome of the relationship youâre seeking with this deity. Like the first card, fairly self explanatory.Â
Hey all! This is the first custom tarot spread Iâm posting online! I might do more of these in the future! Iâm super nervous, and I hope this is helpful to somebody out there. Have a good one!

Persephone
Greek goddess of Spring and the Underworld
Persephone was also titled Kore (the Maiden) as the goddess of springâs bounty. The most popular myth including this goddess was of course the story of young Persephone playing with her nymph friends before being seized by Hades and brought to the Underworld. When Hades had seen Persephone, he immediately desired her and was granted Permission by Zeus to take her. So Hades chased the young goddess in his chariot and seized her up to him as she cried for help. It is in most versions, that Persephone fought against Hadesâ advances but is tricked into eating the pomegranate seeds. After eating from the pomegranate, Persephone is rescued, but can only stay with her mother for two-thirds of the year, while she must spend one-third with Hades. She goes and laments to her mother after her rescue, with Hekate agreeing to stay and accompany her. During the absence of her beloved daughter each year, Demeter mourns, causing the life of the Earth to fade. Â
Apollodorus in the following passage summarizes the contents of the Homeric Hymn to Demeter. Pseudo-Apollodorus, Bibliotheca 1. 29-33 (trans. Aldrich) (Greek mythographer C2nd A.D.):
âPlouton [Haides] fell in love with Persephone, and with Zeusâ help secretly kidnapped her. I begin to sing of rich-haired Demeter Semne Thea (Reverend goddess) - of her and her trim-ankled daughter [Persephone] whom Aidoneus rapt away, given to him by all-seeing Zeus the loud-thunderer. Apart from Demeter Lady of the golden sword (khrysaoros), Giver of glorious fruits (aglaokarpos), she was playing with the deep-bosomed daughters of Okeanos and gathering flowers over a soft meadow, roses and crocuses and beautiful violets, irises also and hyacinths and the narcissus, which Ge (Earth) made to grow at the will of Zeus and to please the Host of Many [Haides], to be a snare for the bloom-like girlâŚThe girl was amazed and reached out with both hands to take the lovely toy; but the wide-pathed earth yawned there in the Nysion plain, and the lord, Host of Many, with his immortal horses sprang out upon herâŚ
Hades caught her up reluctant on his golden car and bare her away lamenting. Then she cried out shrilly with her voice, calling upon her father, the Son of Kronos [Zeus], who is most high and excellent. But no one, either of the deathless gods or of mortal men, heard her voice, nor yet the olive-trees bearing rich fruit: only tender-hearted Hekate, bright-coiffed, the daughter of Persaios, heard the girl from her cave, and the lord Helios (the Sun), Hyperionâs bright son, as she cried to her father, the Son of Kronos [Zeus]. But he was sitting aloof, apart from the gods, in his temple where many pray, and receiving sweet offerings from mortal men. So he, that Son of Kronos [Haides], of many namesâŚwas bearing her away by leave of Zeus on his immortal chariotâhis own brotherâs child and was all unwilling.
And so long as she, the goddess, yet beheld earth and starry heaven and the strong-flowing sea where fishes shoal, and the rays of the sun, and still hoped to see her dear mother [Demeter] and the tribes of the eternal gods, so long hope calmed her great heart for all her trouble; and the heights of the mountains and the depths of the sea rang with her immortal voice: and her queenly mother heard her. Thus Demeter dressed in mourning robes and frantically searched for her daughter with the help of Hekate for nine days.
When Zeus commanded Plouton to send Kore [Persephone] back up, Plouton gave her a pomegranate seed to eat, as assurance that she would not remain long with her mother. With no foreknowledge of the outcome of her act, Persephone consumed it. Askalaphos, the son of Akheron and Gorgyra, bore witness against her, in punishment for which Demeter pinned him down with a heavy rock in Hadesâ realm. But Persephone was obliged to spend a third of each year with Plouton, and the remainder of the year among the gods.â
Roles:Â Persephone holds a role as the dread queen of the Underworld, which tradition had it forbidden to speak her name. This tradition comes from her conflation with the very old chthonic goddess Despoina (â[the] mistressâ), whose real name could not be revealed to anyone except those initiated into her mysteries. In Homerâs epics, she appears as the formidable and venerable queen of the shades, who carries into effect the curses of men upon the souls of the dead. The story of Persephone having to marry Hades is thought to be written as inspired from the grief Ancient Greek motherâs faced when their daughters were taken away by their new husbands without warning.
Persephone is also the only one of all the Underworld deities who will grant reincarnation to human spirits, but only if they repent for all their misdeeds before theyâve been dead for over nine years. This, however, hardly happens since most humans do not realize all their mistakes or are unwilling to change for a long time. Those who do succeed in this through effort and wisdom, return to the Earth in another body to grant their wisdom to others. Although for those who do not repent in time or are serving a different Cthonic god in the Underworld, they will only go to Elysium and merge with their higher self, which will not allow them to exist with their previous personality again (they can still reincarnate, but it will be as a different personality). This action of Persephone was even documented by an initiate of spirituality named Pindar:Â âFor those that Persephone accepts their repentance, those souls she sends back the Ninth Year, to the sun of the upper world (to be reborn). There, they become respected rulers, strong men, and great sages, and the future commemorates them as heroes.â
Appearance: Persephone appears in her late 20â˛s, is elegant, has pale skin, long black hair, and hazel eyes. She tends to wear long, dark purple dresses in the ancient Greek style.
Personal experiences:Â Persephone is withdrawn around those she does not know, but very friendly and often upbeat with those she is friends with. She is generally timid and introverted but can also be quite rebellious. Overall, however, she is kind and friendly, making her easily approachable but becomes quickly angered if Hades/Pluto is mentioned. Persephone manages to come across as both youthful and serious due to her time in the Underworld and because of her trauma. She enjoys helping those who are in need and being able to lend them advice, though also showing them how to be strong. But this goddess is not one to be crossed. She can even be quite cold when angered, but she is usually understanding. This lovely goddess also has a soft spot for the Dead, as she guides their trials in the Underworld until they can move on to Elysium.Â
In my workings with Persephone, she is not actually married to Hades, but was held by him against her will. Itâs true that she was kidnapped by him, but this was moreso a very traumatic experience in which Hades held her captive for many ages. He had done this not out of sadism, but out of desperation since he was unable to find a companion; but this does not justify his actions since he soon ended up taking her by force. After a long time, Persephone finally escaped him and left to rule a large section of the Underworld on her own, with Hades seeking to repent for his actions. Itâs not something she enjoys talking about due to all that Hades did to her, so please be gentle with her regarding this story. Also, due to her being kept in the Underworld for so long, she is moreso connected to death now than life. Persephone lives within a beautiful palace that has black and purple colours. Â

The Great Goddess Hecate (Hekate)
Who is Hecate? She is the Goddess of Witchcraft, Necromancy, Ghosts, Magic, and, in some instances, the Night, Darkness, The Mist, and Moon. For some She is also the goddess of motherhood, protection, and the sea. She is a Hellenic deity, born of the Titans Asteria and Perses. Thereâs a few beliefs circling around Her being a crone goddess or a Triple Goddess, but those are modern and neopagan beliefsâwhich She predates. I also consider Her to be a part of the Chthonic deities.
Symbology: Black dogs, Wolves, Keys, Torches, Flames, Torches, Crossroads, Serpents, Daggers, Birds of Prey (crows, ravens, owls), the Moon, witchcraft tools (such as cauldrons, tarot, athames)
Offerings & Devotional Acts for Her:
Figurines of any of Her symbols
keys, skeleton keys, lockets
fire witchcraft and candles, flames, matchsticks
dedicating any lunar or symbolic jewelry to Her
black/dark crystals such as obsidian and onyx
nocturnal animal imagery
black/cool colored glitter
baneful/poisonous herbs and plants
pomegranates/berries (She seems to really like blackberries)
dark blend wines
honey, cinnamon, poppy seeds, chocolates (dark)
mugwort, lavender, roses, jasmine, dragonâs blood
bones and feathers from birds of prey (please check your local laws about obtaining these)
pinpricks of blood (please DO NOT attempt this if you struggle with self harm/etc, blood magic is particularly strong and isnât for everyone. She will understand if you cannot offer that to her).
Taking midnight walks, setting up altars and rituals at crossroads, paying respects to the dead and practicing your craft in a cemeteryÂ
Any playlists, poems, literature, whether it be your own or just a piece you associate with Her, also make wonderful offerings.Â
Lunar Influences & Connections: Reaching out to Hecate tends to work best at night, and really any time the moon is at itâs peak. The Witching Hours, midnight to 3A.M., during strong lunar influences (blue moons, blood moons, eclipses, new moons, etc) all hold strong bonds with Hecate. Also, any time it is particularly foggy or your surroundings are covered in a mist is a good time to try to connect with Her.
Disclaimer: These are correspondences that have been gathered through my personal experiences working through my craft with Her. If you find She responds better to different offerings/during different times, by all means, stick to it! Your bond with Her is your own and should be cultivated in whichever way works best for you and Her. Thank You!

your favourite scented candle or incense
chamomile tea bags
luke warm water
a brush
optional:

brush the brush through your hair slowly, visualising the blockages being brushed off too. remember to focus on the scent of the lighted candle/incense for that extra rejuvenation!

Carefully attach the thread to the amethyst and tie it to the outside of the jar
Layer the ingredients, other than the amethyst, with the lavender on top
seal your jar with wax or a candle. I always âseal with a kissâ out of pure habit
Burn a candle on on near the jar to charge
Leave near the head of your bed as you sleep
enjoy some clearer dreams and hopefully, a clearer outlook on life!
