𝑐𝑢𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑠𝑠𝑖𝑚𝑜

laughter rang out around her but yujin's lip didn't twitch. only movement occurred in the muscles around her eyes, dark pools narrowing. the actors, a title she would advocate stripping them of, continued fumbling about on stage.  ❝ is this the best they're offering? ❞   boredom wove through syllables as she glanced at her friend.  ❝ i fail to see how idiocy is amusing. ❞

features  twist  into  disbelief  and  quiet  judgement  at  the  scene  —  dilan  knew  it  was  over  the  moment  one  of  them  began  stumbling  over  words,  unprofessional  at  best.  what  came  next  was  a  sequence  of  sloppy  mistakes,  each  one  chipping  away  at  her  attention.  "  idiocy  can  be  quite  entertaining,  "  she  mutters  to  yujin,  exhaling  sharply.  "  but  this?  this  is  far  worse.  this  is  incompetence,  and  that  is  never  funny.  "  for  someone  who  constantly  demands  perfection,  she  couldn’t  help  but  critique.  "  how  long  do  you  think  we’ve  got  until  they  finally  wrap  this  shit  up?  "  to  tell  the  truth,  dilan  has  no  intention  of  enduring  another  moment  of  this  abysmal  performance.

delightful  gasp  emitted  from  her  as  feet  shuffled  as  quickly  as  possible  through  the  petting  zoo,  leaving  companion  behind  in  the  hurry  to  get  to  the  furry  creature.  “  i  want  a  pet  goat.  do  you  think  i  could  have  a  pet  goat  in  my  brownstone?  ”  skirts  of  silk  dress  not  even  a  concern  as  she  knelt  down  next  to  the  animal  and  careful  strokes  of  the  fur  of  their  neck  becoming  her  new  fixation.  “  i  have  as  much  of  a  yard  as  you  can  in  the  city.  i  think  i  could  make  it  work.  what  do  you  think?  ”

even  with  the  girl  skipping  ahead,  dilan  strolls  at  her  own  pace  towards  the  petting  zoo.  there  is  no  need  to  rush  when  they  have  all  the  time  in  the  world,  or  at  least  that’s  what  it  feels  like  being  here.  "  i  think  you  should  get  one,  "  she  says,  head  nodding  in  reassurance.  "  i  don’t  suppose  you  can  bring  one  of  these  back  home,  but  then  again,  nothing  is  impossible.  i’m  sure  they  could  make  it  work  for  you.  "  dilan  knows  if  she  ever  wanted  a  pet  goat  right  here,  it  would  come  home  with  her  no  matter  what.

not  overly  thrilled  to  be  in  attendance,  an  event  as  such  not  her  usual  vibe  but  considered  this  an  act  of  charity  —  donating  money  came  on  day  one,  but  time  here  was  forced  to  be  prolonged.  snipping  at  stems,  she  chooses  her  own  flowers  to  work  with  in  hopes  to  make  a  gift  for  someone  that  could've  given  up  on  her  but  didn't.  "  what  do  you  think  about  these?  "  cat  asks  upon  returning  to  their  shared  work  station,  impressed  with  her  own  choice.  

there  is  no  doubt  she  would  rather  be  anywhere  but  the  ice  rink,  and  yet  this  whimsical  getaway  has  proven  to  be  quite  delightful  —  never  mind  the  looming  threat  of  secrets  being  exposed  should  she  fail  to  attend.  preoccupied  with  her  own  creation,  one  intended  for  the  girl  returning  to  join  her,  a  smile  comes  easily  as  she  glances  at  the  flowers.  "  those  are  really  beautiful,  "  dilan  says,  careful  fingers  reaching  for  the  blooms  she’s  picked  earlier,  attempting  to  intertwine  the  stems.  "  to  be  honest  with  you,  i’ve  never  made  a  flower  crown  before.  "  she  would  figure  it  out  regardless,  far  too  stubborn  to  ask  for  help.  still,  she  turns  to  cat  and  asks,  "  this  isn’t  your  first  time,  no?  "  at  least  it  wouldn’t  be  too  obvious  if  they  were  both  completely  clueless.

openstarter   —   sanssouci    palace , midday

it’s  one  of  the  things  dilan  has  been  looking  forward  to  ever  since  she  first  set  foot  in  the  palace.  "  sure,  there’s  gotta  be  a  few  around  here.  "  now  that  she  thinks  about  it,  having  just  one  secret  passage  in  a  castle  like  this  wouldn’t  be  impossible,  but  still  completely  absurd.  "  don’t  you  think  that’s  a  little  cliché,  using  one  of  the  novels  as  the  trigger?  "  never  mind  that  she’s  considered  it  herself.

           mid afternoon,   the gardens,   𝘴𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘤𝘪 𝘱𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦

there  is  no  denying  that  the  scenery  before  them  looks  like  something  straight  out  of  a  fairytale,  intentionally  so.  still,  dilan  couldn't  help  the  lingering  thought  now  that  it  was  brought  up.  "  you  sure  about  that?  "  a  beat,  as  if  giving  ruby  a  chance  to  reconsider.  "  we  never  really  know  what’s  been  buried  underneath  all  this…  could  be  full  of  old  dead  things.  "  not  that  it  would  come  as  a  surprise,  after  all.

         she’d  never  been  good  at  small  talk,  finding  it  difficult  to  find  inspiring  things  to  talk  about  in  regards  to  the  weather  or  her  current  life  situation.  she  found  it  more  interesting  to  deep  dive  into  the  gossip  that  she’d  heard  recently,  or  talk  about  the  latest  events  that  were  coming  up  —  or  new  designs  that  were  dropping  the  new  season  collection.  sarcasm  laced  tone,  chin  resting  in  the  palm  of  her  hand  as  she  was  asked  the  most  dreadful  question:  how  have  you  been  ?   “   i’m  dancing  around  a  quarter  life  crisis.   ”   a  pause.   “   you  ?   ”           +   @reb1rthe

small  talk  isn't  really  her  thing,  but  running  into  gabriella  while  exploring  the  castle  all  in  her  lonesome,  she  reckons  there  is  no  harm  in  trying.  "  that’s  awful,  "  she  says,  deadpan.  strangely,  dilan  couldn’t  tell  if  the  other  woman  is  telling  the  truth  or  just  trying  to  mess  with  her.  "  couldn’t  be  me  —  i’m  thriving,  and  you  should  be  too.  life’s  too  short  for  a  quarter  life  crisis  anyway.  have  you  tried  anything  around  here  at  all?  "  there  are  plenty  to  do  during  their  stay,  or  so  she  heard.

        somewhere  between  too  wired  to  function  and  too  exhausted  for  the  same,  leaning  up  against  the  cafe  wall  for  her  coffee  the  only  thing  keeping  her  upright.  thoughts  of  returning  to  the  studio  just  for  a  couple  more  hours  before  she  went  back  to  the  quietness  of  her  loft.  something  that  vaguely  sounded  like  her  order  called  out  prompted  her  to  push  off  of  the  wall  and  pick  up  the  cup,  turning  to  see  another  looking  like  they  were  doing  the  same.  "  oh,  wait  ...  i  honestly  wasn't  listening,  i'm  so  sorry.  is  this  yours  ?  " 

confusion  flickers  across  features,  words  taking  a  moment  to  register  before  her  head  shakes  in  response.  "  no,  i  was  just  about  to  order.  must  be  someone  else's  if  not  yours  then.  "  dilan  just  got  here,  after  all.  then  a  following  thought:  if  the  woman  already  has  something  ordered,  she  must  have  gone  through  the  options.  "  do  they  have  any  special  drinks  out  here?  anything  worth  trying?  "

some   sort of boring sports sponsors gala   /   night.

a  faint  smile  tugs  her  lips  at  the  question.  "  who  doesn’t?  the  only  person  who  gives  a  damn  is  the  one  doing  the  talking.  it’s  their  world  and  we’re  all  just  living  in  it,  apparently.  "  dilan  has  been  to  enough  of  these  events  to  recognize  the  pattern  —  polished  on  the  surface,  but  painfully  devoid  of  anything  meaningful.  "  well,  that’s  none  of  our  concern  right  now.  how  do  you  like  it  here  so  far?  "  she  asks,  full  attention  settling  on  melis.

champagne   flute   balancing   between   fingertips   ,   blue   hues   drifting   over   the   sea   of   people   .   a   great   turnout   ,   though   the   beverage   in   hand   does   little   to   impress   .   “ you'd   think   after   holding   a   couple   of   these   ,   they’d   offer   something   that   doesn’t   taste   like   it   came   out   of   a  screw   cap   bottle .   ” 

hazel  eyes  drift  to  the  champagne  flute  in  her  own  hand,  a  half  smirk  tugging  at  her  lips.  "  it’s  a  charity  gala.  what  did  you  expect?  "  she  asks,  more  rhetorical  than  anything.  having  been  to  a  couple  of  these,  julia  has  since  learned  not  to  expect  much,  although  that  doesn't  stop  her  from  showing  up.  "  i  doubt  any  of  the  money  went  to  this.  "  the  drinks  aren't  part  of  the  charity,  after  all.  her  gaze  flickers  briefly  over  the  crowd  before  settling  on  max,  shoulders  shrugging  in  nonchalance.  "  and  if  it  still  pulls  people  in,  why  bother  changing  a  thing?  "  either  way,  it's  a  smart  play  on  their  end.

irritation turned into something more akin to fury the more the ballerina spoke. he found sometimes silence to be the only answer that should accompany such negative emotions. that was until a question was asked. " quite frankly, i don't care what you do. figure it out yourself. leave, stay, it's absolutely no skin off my back. " he glanced at the cable and clenched his jaw. " keep it. " words spoken only from pride. he was sure he could find a payphone round here somewhere.

clearly,  she  should’ve  expected  nothing  less.  "  fine,  "  she  mutters,  shoving  the  cable  back  to  where  it  was.  that’s  what  she  gets  for  trying  to  help,  even  if  the  attitude  she  brings  along  doesn’t  make  things  any  easier.  "  yeah,  i’m  definitely  leaving.  "  the  real  question  is  how  —  she  has  never  called  a  ride  before,  although  maybe  someone  is  around  to  give  her  a  lift.  pulling  out  her  phone,  julia  goes  through  her  contacts  and  settles  on  a  close  friend.  "  but  i'm  staying  in  the  car  until  someone  gets  here,  so  you’re  stuck  with  me  while  you  figure  out  what  to  do  with  yourself.  "  she  could  only  hope  the  call  would  go  through.

hands  knocked  quietly  on  front  door  of  one  of  his  oldest  friends,  weekly  check  in  with  the  busy  coach  in  the  forefront  of  his  mind  as  he  waited.  growing  up  from  awkward  teens  to  busy  adults  had  once  put  the  two  of  them  in  a  spot  where  drifting  had  been  a  normal  part  of  life.  her  focus  had  been  her  sport  and  his  on  college  and  everything  that  followed.  it  wasn't  until  her  career  ending  injury  that  he  made  a  choice  to  actively  stick  around,  to  be  the  friend  they  both  needed.  brilliant  smile  grew  on  his  face  as  her  door  creaked  open  and  he  held  up  the  bag  in  hand.  “  i  am  here  and  i  brought  brunch! please tell me you didn't forget our catch up.  ”

it’s  not  often  julia  lets  anyone  into  her  space,  but  arlo  isn’t  just  anyone  —  he  might  just  be  one  of  the  few,  if  not  the  only,  that  she  trusts  enough  to  let  her  guard  down.  not  that  she  would  ever  admit  it  out  loud.  the  moment  she  finds  arlo  at  the  door,  her  lips  curve  into  a  knowing  smile,  one  brow  lifting  in  quiet  amusement.  "  when  have  i  ever  forgotten  anything?  "  she  says,  leaning  against  the  door  frame  with  arms  folded  across  her  chest.  despite  her  busy  schedule,  julia  always  makes  time  for  people  who  matter,  and  their  little  catch  -  up  session  is  something  she  looks  forward  to  every  week.  "  you  promised  brunch,  so  i’ve  been  waiting  for  you.  come  in.  "  she  steps  aside,  finally  letting  him  through.

call ended after final word was delivered, neither room nor time left for argument from the person on the other end. after phone was returned to her purse, yujin made her way back to where companion waited.  ❝ where were we ? ❞   announced her return. apology deemed unnecessary, and the door to what had briefly called her away shut behind her; own matters were not for other ears.

one  thing  about  julia  ko  is  she  couldn’t  stand  being  interrupted.  sure,  it’s  fine  when  she’s  the  one  cutting  in,  but  being  on  the  receiving  end?  absolutely  not.  nothing  else  could've  mattered  more  in  her  presence,  after  all.  the  familiar  voice  snaps  her  back  into  reality,  faux  smile  etching  into  her  mouth  as  she  looks  up  at  yujin.  "  i  think  we’re  done,  "  olympian  quips,  the  smile  slipping  off  her  face  the  second  silverware  clatters  down.  "  you  probably  have  far  more  important  things  to  attend  to  anyway.  maybe  we  can  reschedule  this  for  another  time?  "  truth  be  told,  julia  has  no  real  intention  of  continuing  whatever  they  have  going  on  right  now.  maybe  she’s  just  asking  out  of  courtesy  —  to  make  a  point,  always  has  to  be  the  one  calling  the  final  shots,  business  matters  or  not.

" this cannot be happening ! " deep voice rumbled as he opened his car door , stepping out of his car , stress smeared all over his face . " a flat ?! a damn flat tire . " furious didn't even begin to cover what he was feeling . " and a dead phone , any chance i can borrow yours ? or better yet , do you have a cable so i can charge mine ? " at least that way he could still check his emails .

retired  skater  lets  out  a  long,  exhausted  sigh  in  response  to  the  over  -  the  -  top  reaction.  clearly,  she  should’ve  just  trusted  her  instincts  and  brought  her  own  car  but  alas,  here  they  are.  "  do  you  ever  do  anything  right?  "  she  asks,  the  remark  sounding  far  more  like  a  judgment  than  a  question  as  she  fights  the  urge  to  roll  her  eyes.  "  this  is  such  a  waste  of  time.  "  still,  she  digs  through  her  birkin,  another  quiet  sigh  slipping  out  while  she  searches  for  a  charging  cable.  "  are  you  going  to  get  this  fixed  soon?  i  need  a  real  estimation  —  i  have  places  to  be  after  this.  "  with  that,  julia  finally  hands  over  the  cable,  waiting  for  his  response.  she's  a  busy  woman,  after  all.
