    “They would.. Those memories were ones they’d cling onto for happiness. I understand that, though—Times like those aren’t ones you’d want to give up so easily. Maybe even now.. I can’t speak on behalf of everyone else, but I’m sure there are people that have adopted a mindset like this. They sit cross-legged in the corner, almost begging to go back in time. That would be nice, huh? But, that’s impossible. Even what they’re doing.. You can’t dismiss what’s right in front of you.”

    Mahiru felt similar, running an index finger atop the poster in front of the two and slowly lowering her hand soon afterwards. Even then, one must look at the present rather than becoming fixated on the past. She couldn’t take back what she has done, nor could anyone else. With that thought in mind, she became curious as to what her other former classmates were up to. In fact, speaking to Sonia on such a casual level after what occurred was a miracle in itself.

    “It’s an abnormality, Sonia-chan. That’s why we’re standing in rubble. Kind of like what I said earlier.. Those people that push aside the current times are only harming themselves in the long run. What benefit would you gain from hiding in solitude? Even.. Even if you’re not a physical person, you don’t have to stand away useless.. She told me that..”

“ I am certain that you are right. There are many individuals that wish they could go back in time to change our current state of the world. People probably dream of doing that. Anything is possible in a dream, even super powers! Did you know that you are not allowed to loose your life in your own dreams? Maybe some people try to escape reality by entering these dreams... ”

Her gaze shifted from her friend to the ground beneath her feet processing the words she had just spoken. Children have many dreams when they are at this age, but this environment must certainly halt this process. They aren’t the only ones who wish to accomplish things in life, many people do. The owner of the hotel they stood in probably had dreams as well. He probably never thought that it would turn into this rubble.

She did notice how the other was very appreciative of the lost object being returned, but nothing was needed. If Sonia was to be honest, she thought the owner would just take the object, say thank you, and then depart quickly with that few exchange of words.

    They had helped bring this place to demise. They were a piece of the destruction. That thought pounded through the photographer’s head at a constant rate, fully aware of its extent. Denial needn’t be an option in such a situation—Perhaps it would be a stretch to refer to it as acceptance or embracing the new norm, but it was ‘her’ that acted as the source of influence. If anything, Mahiru had to commend her on her way of speech, for words (and actions) had benefits in their own ways.

    “Yeah.. They acted as an escape. After a stressful time, it’s best for your health to take some time to yourself and gather your thoughts.  Everyone has their own reasons for taking trips, but.. Regardless of the ‘why,’ it’s what you learn and see from a trip that makes it so valued. The atmosphere, the people, the adventures.. Like you said, those are memories. Precious, cherished memories..” Her words drifted off, looking out the window and take note of the rubble for miles to come. It was disastrous—Even then, it had a strange appeal to it even Mahiru couldn’t describe.

    “If someone did rebuild it, wouldn’t it just get destroyed?  That’s why nobody has bothered.. Constructing a new hotel and gathering people would bring them hope. But.. If that all turned into ashes, nothing but despair would be left in their minds. Anyone with common sense keeps that thought close, I’m sure. They don’t want to accept this new reality.  Yet.. They can’t escape it. It’s impossible.” She knew that all too well, letting the speeches given by their self-declared leader run through her head. Junko Enoshima left quite the impression.

“They would share the memories with others once they return back to their homes I imagine.. If someone was speaking about precious moments on a trip it would certainly make me curious...” 

Coming to places as such would really give her an impact of what their actions have done. If despair had not spread as quickly, and far as it did then this place would most likely still be up and running. The kid on the poster may be returning with his family because he had such a fun time on their last trip.
