The officially licensed 1992 Super Mario Bros. Card Game contains a rare instance of Toad in a hindering rather than helpful role: if a player draws a Toad card (called Mushroom Retainer here, as in the NES Super Mario Bros. manual), that player cannot win the game until that card is in some way discarded or passed to another player.
