i can probably assume the reader of this fairly specific journal knows that iconoclasm was a protestant thing. i don't need to footnote everything.
writing "the Wars of Religion (1562-1598) but shaking my head as I do so the audience knows that I know the conflicts actually ended around 1629.

"He, hearing his sentence read out, which was for the crime of lèse-majestÊ*, protested that there was nothing that showed he had undertaken anything against the King, but just that he wanted to oppose - with a great many of the French Nobility - the injustice done by the Guises. And if that action against them was the crime of lèse-majestÊ, it would be necessary to proclaim them kings of France before condemning him for that crime."
*lèse-majestÊ is a crime against the monarch. It can be just as nebulous as that sounds - I went to an interesting talk at the Archives Nationales about it. It was taken out of the code pÊnal in France in 1832.

Recently someone told me the ideal publication workflow is to always have one in preparation, one or two under review, and one forthcoming. What do you think about that? And any advice on how to accomplish this?
I mean, that sounds really nice, but I'm not sure it's consistently attainable. For me, at least. Certainly a good ideal to have - essentially always having something in the tank...but I gotta teach too lol. This is not to say that it's garbage or anything, but ideal does not always mean attainable or realistic.
And maybe it's a little hypocritical of me to say that, because I do have one forthcoming publication (maybe 2?), one under review (sort of, I'm doing revisions for it now), and one in preparation, but I don't really think of it that way.
This is a new position for me to be in. I have one publication from 2023 and only just really got into doing more conferences and all that from about 2024 on. It's not something that happens overnight. My goal really is write one article a year if I can, and try and get my dissertation published.
If this is something to do, you have to work into that cycle - it's not going to appear overnight. Starting is probably the most important part of this - start writing, start revising, start sending something off to journals and see what happens. If you have one article (or whatever) under review, then you're free to move onto the next thing. Which will sometimes take time! It took me over a year to get this article accepted and part of that was spending weeks trying to figure out if I was talking about Thing 1 or Thing 2.
Once you have momentum, you can keep it going, but! At least for me, my university values teaching very highly, so I need to dedicate plenty of time to that. I'm not going to be able to have a ton of things going on at once, no matter how efficient I am. Obviously this will vary by discipline, job title, etc, but still. Also by ability to work on multiple projects at once, which is...not my strength.
I think the best publishing cycle is one you can sustain and will not drive you to burnout. Of course, we can't control everything - my tenure clock is going to start ticking this fall, so I do need to be on that grind - but the plan that is going to be the most successful is going to be 1. sustainable and 2. flexible. Think about what is reasonable for you to get done and build up to it.
