it is 1569, protestant worship in any form is forbidden within the city of Paris

the gastines family home is alleged to have been the site of the celebration of the eucharist

members of the gastines family are hanged, the house is razed and a large stone cross is erected in the space left

the Peace of St Germain ends the third War of Religion in 1570. it requires the removal of all monuments to religious hated on both sides, which obviously includes the cross of Gastines.

Parisian Catholics do NOT like this and refuse the removal

Compromise is attempted - move the cross to the Cemetery of the Innocents (justified as "from profane to sacred ground" - Diefendorf, 1991)

Preachers say that actually this is an attempt to erase the memory of Christ's sacrifice
