& I STAND.

‘  how  many  of  you  are  there  ??  ‘    wide  eyes  remained  in  shock  knowing  yet  another  shepherd  worked  here.    ‘  is  it  like  a  JOB  REQUIREMENT  to  be  either  a  shepherd  by  BIRTH  or  married  to  one  ??  ‘    her  humor  was  a  lot  different  than  most  ,  and  some  found  it  awkward.  but  lying  with  your  guts  hanging  outside  your  skin  for  months  ,  strange  comments  and  jokes  was  the  best  way  to  make  it  through.

‘  hey  ,  BERNARD  would  still  make  a  GREAT  name  for  a  girl  !!  ‘    joking  obviously  with  words  followed  by  a  laugh  ,  a  wave  of  pure  ELATION  washed  over  the  now  mother  of  two.  not  even  her  NIGHTMARES  could  pull  her  joy  from  this  moment  in  time.  this  ,  this  MOMENT  ,  ever  since  she  had  the  extensive  and  groundbreaking  surgery  preformed  on  her  abdomen  after  SIX  MONTHS  of  being  held  together  by  plastic  wrap  ,  an  under  -  looming  FEAR  of  not  being  able  to  carry  a  child  of  her  own  weighed  heavy  on  her.  and  throughout  the  pregnancy  ,  it  did  not  lessen.  if  anything  it  only  grew  STRONGER.  fearing  every  single  second  that  something  would  go  wrong  and  she  would  lose  the  baby.  but  now  ,  with  the  little  one  wrapped  up  tight with  a  little  pink  hat  covering  her  head  ,  a  feeling  of  ten  thousand  pounds  of  weight  fell  off  her  chest  at  once.  leaving  her  more  at  ease  than  ever  in  her  life.    ‘  maybe  we  should  have  had  a  BACKUP  name  like  you  suggested.  ‘

toes  buried  deep  in  the  damp  sand.    ‘  i  miss  you  too  EEYORE  ’    a  smile  grew  as  if  he  was  sitting  just  beside  her  and  could  see  it  with  his  own  eyes.    ‘  how  is  everything  up  NORTH  ??  how’s  MOM  ??  ’    it  wasn’t  that  she  moved  to  get  away  from  her  family  ,  hell  she  missed  them  all  every  waking  hour  of  every  day.  but  thankfully  ,  over  the  decade  ,  things  such  as  IPHONES  and  SKYPE  had  come  to  be.

one  semester  was  all  that  stood  between  megan  and  following  her  brother’s  ENORMOUS  FOOTSTEPS  into  medical  school.  one  semester  of  harder  than  life  classes  ,  exams  ,  and  interviews  being  all  that  stood  between  her  and  being  a  SURGEON.  however  ,  the  hustle  and  bustle  of  college  could  not  keep  her  from  visiting  home  every  so  often.  but  this  weekend  ,  it  wasn’t  just  OWEN  who  walked  through  the  door.  but  a  shadow  ,  a  well  built  ,  ATTRACTIVE  shadow.  cocking  her  head  to  the  side  as  to  get  a  better  view.  when  his  sly  words  slid  in  her  direction  ,  megan  had  no  troubles  ignoring  the  throbbing  vein  protruding  in  her  brother’s  forehead.    ‘  and  he  never  said  his  BEST  FRIEND  looked  like  a  GREEK  GOD  ’

‘  woah  ,  woah  ––  ‘    dropping  the  items  in  her  hand  ,  megan  wasted  no  beat  or  moment  coming  to  the  side  of  the  PRESIDENT  with  a  chair  in  tow.    ‘  here  ,  ma’am  ,  SIT  DOWN  and  put  your  head  between  your  knees  and  BREATHE  ‘

‘  NO  ’    her  voice  was  stern  and  loud  for  such  a  small  room  as  she  watched  his  hand  grip  the  handle.  it  was  the  drastic  SWITCH  of  his  moods  towards  her  going  via  chopper  to  the  aid  of  those  trapped  by  the  fire  which  told  megan  his  push  for  her  to  go  was  not  PURE.  that  his  heartache  of  the  situation  being  nearly  identical  to  that  of  the  past  still  sat  HEAVY  on  his  soul.  he  could  tell  her  to  go  until  he  was  blue  in  the  face  ,  twisting  his  words  in  a  million  ways  ,  but  it  would  never  hide  the  TRUTH  and  FEAR  she  saw  in  him.  the  hesitation  to  let  her  get  back  on  the  very  same  mode  of  transportation  he  watched  fall  out  of  the  sky  nearly  ELEVEN  years  ago  in  the  desert.    ‘  no  you  don’t  get  to  just  WALK  AWAY  after  this.  you  don’t  get  to  play  the  WOUNDED  DOG.  nathan  ––  if  we  are  going  to  make  this  WORK  like  we  want  it  too  ,  there  can’t  be  anymore  RUNNING.  i  ,  you  can’t  just  SHUT  DOWN  on  me.  i  need  to  know  how  you  feel  ––  ’    she  says  just  as  if  she  was  skilled  in  the  art  of  expressing  emotions  herself.    ‘  i  need  you  to  TALK  TO  ME  ’

listening  to  how  he  had  found  the  intricate  piece  of  jewlery  within  the  miles  and  miles  of  sand  ,  megan  felt  her  heart  only  grow  larger  and  larger  by  the  second.  even  in  a  moment  as  intimate  at  this  ,  leave  it  to  NATHAN  to  find  a  way  to  toss  in  a  CORNY  COMMENT  into  the  mix.    ‘  and  exactly  how  long  have  you  been  waiting  to  use  that  line  ??  ’    a  chuckle  tossed  out  between  tears  of  happiness  filled  the  room.  it  was  a  MOMENT  she  never  knew  she  needed.  a  GIFT  she  never  realized  she  had  missed.  resting  her  own  hand  atop  of  his  larger one  ,  soft  eyes  once  again  took  over  her  facade.  the  way  his  eyes  SHIMMERED  when  he  was  happy  ,  the  way  his  I  LOVE  YOU  sounded  when  it  was  pure.    ‘  i’ve  ALWAYS  loved  you  ’    megan  replied  in  a  softer  voice.    ‘  even  locked  away  for  years  ,  even  when  things  seemed  impossible  ,  or  when  you  were  doing  my  head  in  with  your  stubbornness  ,  i’ve  ALWAYS  loved  you  ’    sealed  with  a  kiss  ,  the  clutter  of  butterflies  filled  her  stomach  began  to  go  mad  with  desire  as  their  lips  came  together.  proving  yet  again  ,  after  everything  both  of  them  ha  stumbled  through  ,  they  were  still  and  always  would  be  MEANT  TO  BE.

did  megan  send  him  away  into  the  arms  of  another  woman  in  hopes  he  would  find  the  HAPPINESS  he  forever  deserved  ??  yes.  his  happiness  had  always  been  her  NUMBER  ONE.  but  never  once  did  it  mean  she  did  not  care  about  him  and  his  wellbeing.  and  being  told  that  not  even  OWEN  had  heard  from  him  brought  an  uneasy  feeling  over  her  heart.    ‘  same  ’    she  replies  with  the  same  nervous  tone  she  was  feeling  within.    ‘  is  this  NORMAL  for  him  ??  just  to  VANISH  ??  ’

‘  well  now  .  .  .  i  feel  if  i  wore  that  to  work  you  might  find  some  COMPETITION  headed  your  way  ’    it  was  the  playful  ,  sexual  under  toned  banter  which  drove  her  wild.  even  after  knowing  him  for  years  ,  he  still  had  the  ability  with  his  WORDS  and  TOUCH  to  make  her  knees  weak.  and  if  not  for  work  calling  both  of  their  names  ,  megan  was  sure  for  the  rest  of  the  day  she  would  be  covered  only  by  a  sheet  or  his  own  body  on  top  of  hers.    ‘  now  going  to  lie  though  ,  you  do  look  pretty  SEXY  when  you  get  all  worked  up.  ’

‘  i  swear  when  i  first  saw  him  after  being  taken  of  that  chopper  ,  i  swore  i  was  dead  because  no  one  ALIVE  could  be  as  white  as  he  was  ––  IS  ‘    this  ,  being  able  to  have  someone  to  JOKE  with  without  fear  of  the  other  not  able  to  catch  the  mood  of  the  moment  ,  was  what  megan  craved.  even  locked  away  it  was  hard  to  find  people  who  understood  her  SARCASM  in  the  middle  of  IRAQ.  and  even  in  SEATTLE  it  was  proving  difficult.  but  ,  finding  AMELIA  ,  it  was  like  she  had  found  her  MISSING  BEST  FRIEND.    ‘  honestly  ,  and  sadly  ,  owen’s  always  been  like  that.  back  in  iraq  ,  we  called  him  MAJOR  DIAMOND.  and  not  because  of  his  SPARKING  PERSONALITY  ’    when  she  spoke  of  her  DATE  a  strike  of  interest  leaped  off  the  charts.    ‘  ok  now  you  know  you  can’t  just  tell  me  you  went  on  a  DATE  and  not  tell  me  the  details.  ’

‘  well  ,  i’m  not  going  to  DISAGREE  to  that  if  that’s  what  you’re  after  ‘    watching  him  resume  the  work  on  the  ,  how  he  had  put  it  a  few  times  already  ,  FUCKING  SINK  ,  her  eyes  rolled  playfully.    ‘  if  you  manage  to  get  this  sink  put  together  AND  working  without  a hitch  ,  i  will  prove  it  to  you  ALL  NIGHT  ‘    sex  as  a  bargaining  chip  ??  maybe  some  would  find  it  vulgar  ,  inappropriate  ,  strange.  but  ,  that  ,  those  little  niches’  ,  was  just  how  they  worked.
