watching you
She was watching them from a distance, her face half hidden behind her sketchbook. He noticed, of course. He didnât want to seem like he was keeping an eye on her, though, so he deliberately waited five minutes before he wandered over, stuffing his hands into his pockets to look casual. Or as casual as a seven year old could be after a kickball game with his best friend.
"What are you doing?"
She gave him a small smile.
"Watching you and Sora."
It wasnât the answer heâd expected. âHuh. Must be boring being here by yourself.â
"Itâs not. I like watching you two. And I donât want to get in the way."
He pondered his answer. Reassuring her would surely give away the fact that he wanted to be nice to her, but insisting that she join them would be mean.
Fortunately, Sora could take the fall for him in such times like this. He jerked a thumb behind him where Sora was catching his breath, flopped down on the sand.
"Come on, Sora wanted you to. Weâll show you how to play."
"WellâŠokay." She carefully set her sketchbook away, and then stood up. The sun made a halo of light around her blonde hair in a way that made his heart skip a beat and his face a little hot.
Sora must have waved to her behind him, because she raised a hand to do the same, smiling towards the distance. Riku tried not to think about how she only agreed to play with them when Sora was the one asking. He thought about it anyways, shoving his hands deep into his pockets again. But then, several paces away, she turned to him, a gentle question in her eyes.
It never ceased to startle him, how she could catch him off guard with that look.
"Riku?"
"Coming!" He grinned and ran over to fall into step beside her.
