People have long misused the term nightmare, you have good and bad dreams at night (and dreams that are neither good nor bad) but a true Nightmare is something else, the online culture of today call them 'paralysis demons' but a nightmare or night hag refers to an entity that weighs you down, preventing you from moving during a lucid or waking dream, it is often accompanied by an overwhelming sense of dread and fear or the unnerving sense that something isn't quite right in the world, they can be formless horrors or invoke visions of something unspeakable, a half seen terror or unwelcome visitor.

Normally one is unable to move during a true nightmare, the entity disappears once we are able to break the paralysis and escape the waking dream.

One such night my hag came to visit, maybe her heart wasn't in it, maybe it had been my fitful lucid sleep, but her hold broke too soon, and I like madman drunk on some ephemeral courage pounced on my seemingly weakened tormentor, a mistake, at once it seemed I was trying to grapple not with a creature but with a hurricane, intangible yet ferocious, roaring winds howled in my ears and as I wrestled with the nightmare my vision was bombarded with violent colours as though the northern lights themselves were pouring into my eyes to scourge my mind...
