Lone Wolf by Adam Weymouth: I simply cannot stop telling people about this book. The book is ostensibly about the narrator retracing on foot the path a young wolf took from Slovenia to Italy and actually the initial appeal of the book to me was the aspect of Weymouth going on a big long walk as someone who feels like her life's purpose is truly just to go on walks, but he teases it out in so many compelling ways. The book also traces the fall and rise of wolves in Europe and the once-more-increasing pushback against the wolf populations and Weymouth then also ties the reaction to wolves to the rise of the far right / anti immigration sentiment in Europe and the changing climate. and yes when i read the blurb for this book i was like "this guy needs to be so ffr is he actually trying to compare wolves to immigration and climate change?" and yet genuinely the quotes and reactions he gets from people (who live directly on the route this wolf took when he went on his trip to bring wolves back to verona!!) are absolutely insane like he will ask them about wolves and then about immigration and these people will say the exact same thing about the wolves as they do the foreigners two breaths later. Weymouth is also, like, obviously very pro-wolf and at times he's interviewing these farmers and i was like "man if i was that guy and read this book id be mad as hell lol" but i think he does a good job at grounding what he's writing in actual science and also gets you to empathize with the anti-wolf people without acting like the provably false things they say are valid. the book is just genuinely so enjoyable to read like it was one of those books where i had to consciously read slower to make sure i was fully appreciating it. its such a lovely look into humanity because of how Weymouth is on some level just a dude on a walk and he meets so many interesting people and sees so many interesting things and writes so beautifully about it all so it really did touch the part of my soul that is a walker and loves the experience of walking to see the world around you. also i just learned a lot from it ??? its funny bc frequently in the book he notes how people have strong reactions to and preconceived notions of wolves which i feel is just completely not true for me--i never really thought much about wolves at all before reading this book--but he time and again shows just how strongly people DO feel about wolves throughout the european countryside and also it really made me appreciate the fraught history a single wild animal can have in space and time and how steeped into culture the narrative of wolves are. in the end this book is also a love story too (slavc walked 2000km and just HAPPENED to find another lone wolf out and about in this area where there are no wolves and they became mates??? the serendipity/fate of it is crazy) and genuinely it made me so emotional lmao. ok i could say so much more but i just lovedddddd it. top to bottom.
