The newly redesigned project was ready to make its maiden flight in 1958. The XF4H-1 made its first flight with the ambitious Super Demon design, resulting in an even more ambitious fighter. This test version, and later pre-production version, was the one in which the Phantom II broke the sound barrier and set its records.

Mitra (Mithras) was a deity worshipped in the Roman Empire between the 1st and 4th centuries AD, central to Mithraism, a mystery religion popular among legionaries and officials. With Indo-Iranian roots, Mitra was seen as the Unconquered Sun, defender of truth, light, and contracts. The cult celebrated the "tauroctony"—Mitra killing a sacred bull—in underground sanctuaries (mithraea).
