I support an #IATSE strike. "Gotta get the shot" / "We only have this location for one day" / "Oh look, here's a coffee truck" -- These are just a few of the things heard on film and televisions sets attempting to justify the absurd hours put in week after week. Working until 6 AM on a Friday, coming in at 3 or 4 AM on Monday needs to stop. The location excuse is probably the most abused one. Find a location that you can do multiple days at and maintain reasonable hours. No one should be driving off the road because of 14-20 hour days and lousy turnarounds. No one should be missing doctor's appointments because they're afraid of being replaced. No one should be coming out of pocket for a precious few extra minutes of sleep. And please stop placating us with coffee at 2 AM when we've been there since 11 AM because you know the day is going until 4 or 5. But hey, we're supposed to grin and bear it, right? Because we're all expendable? We should keep our heads down? No, too many horror stories. We're all still human and it's all still just art. Just film and television. "It's not like we're saving lives" is another common set phrase. But we actually COULD save lives. Ours. I am victim of this myself. Coming up in the AD department I had a nearly 20 hour day back in 2014 that ended with me getting in a "safe ride" cab at 6 AM. Exhausted and drained I fell asleep in that cab right before it got hit by another car. If I were more awake I probably would have remembered to put my seatbelt on. I might have been sitting more upright. Maybe I wouldn't have the residual issues I have each day. Maybe I'd have actually put my DGA book in if I felt I could physically handle it anymore. Wasn't fun. Physical therapy, the whole nine. Walked with a cane for almost a year. But at least they got the shot, right? It's more than just IATSE. It's every department. I've seen shows do it right, and I've seen shows do it very wrong. We have no procedures in place to punish the ones doing it wrong. Hopefully, this sets that in motion.
