There was a heart that went missing a few years back. One day, the girl woke up and said she dreamed it was gone and then it was. Thought it must have blown away with the wind or something but then she saw the birds and their bloody beaks and she knew. That’s what they say anyway. The details don’t really matter. The point is, she up and left town a few weeks after that and didn’t come back. That’s what they say. I sleep with the lights on now. All the windows locked. I let the doorbell ring until it stops ringing. I disconnect the phones. I forgive the parts of me that still want love, that don’t know yet that every good thing eventually goes bad, goes rotten, goes unbearable. I hang pictures on clotheslines until the faces unbecome underneath the sunlight. I find dead birds on my doorstep and wonder how they got that way. I write the poems I couldn’t write before. There are a lot of them. It’s not that I was scared of what the words would do if I wrote them, just that I was scared of what they couldn’t do. It turns out they’re good for remembering what the rest of your body doesn’t want to. There’s a better story than this one, but I forget how it goes. Sometimes I’m scared I spent all my dreams on a version of myself I never became.

Decided to play with my pens and marker and draw my assassin empress child Emily Kaldwin. I should redraw...her nose is off center. And I really could’ve taken longer to finish it but I didn’t want to.

So I’ve been trying to figure out how to draw forms and volumes for the past ten thousand years and the best advice I’d gotten up until this point was stuff like “draw the motion”, “draw the form”, “feel the masses”, “draw from life” and I was pretty much like “yes I know my drawings are flat. I know this and I will endeavor to do what you’re telling me to do.” But I didn’t have much luck really.

The other day I was googling it again and I found this page:

And it really helped me understand how I needed to think to draw forms and volumes. The line that clinched it was “The best advice I can give is to not draw anything ever again. Instead, SCULPT the images you’re creating using pencil and paper.” The panel on the flour sack also really helped.

I drew a few curved boxes, blobs, and flour sacks, pretty much following the four panel comic there, and I started to understand the shift in thinking it takes to transform a 2D shape into a 3D form living on the page. I’m not good at it yet. I’ve spent so long translating what I see into a 2D image just by referencing proportions and distances and all that jazz that it takes awhile to try and switch back. The shift kind of feels like looking at one of those optical illusions either of the blue/black dress or the spinning ballerina. Sometimes you see the dress in blue and black, sometimes you see it in white and gold, sometimes the ballerina spins clockwise, sometimes counterclockwise. You can sometimes switch what you see at will but sometimes it’s hard. I still have to warm up a lot with blobs and flour sacks before I get the hang of it again every day, but I finally understand what the idea is all about and that makes me super happy.
