And now the weather

Lost my mind a little and added (if my math is correct) 5,615 beads to Nim Teasdale's Odenwald pattern. Anything worth doing is worth overdoing!

The goal was “soothingly weighted but not uncomfortable to wear, even as someone with chronic pain.” It could have been a little heavier, so maybe I’ll make a shawl with larger beads another time, but I’m very pleased with this one. I used size 6/0 seed beads, applied as I go with a .6mm crochet hook.

Yarn-wise, used 2 cakes of YarnArt Flowers. I knitted the fully purple sections from both, then knitted all the way through the yellow-oranges with a single ball. When I hit the beginning of red-oranges, I used yarn from both cakes, alternating between them. (Not the entirety of both, I played it by ear to make sure I made it through the full rainbow.)

I do have edited charts with bead placements. I will only share them with Nim's permission.

a messy and incomplete list

dreist (adj.) -- audacious, but far more colloquial. when you have the goddamn audacity, you are dreist. i.e. to park that far over the line is dreist as hell

heimat (n.) -- home, but stronger. a home is wherever you have built a life, but heimat is where your roots are. heimat is where you feel pangs of nostalgia when you go to visit your family for christmas and see the shop at the corner.

weltschmerz (n.) -- literally 'world-pain'. the world sucks and sometimes you just sit and feel the pain of it all. that's weltschmerz.

existenzberechtigung (n.) -- the right to exist, often in a comedic context. i.e. pineapple on pizza has absolutely no existenzberechtigung.

fernweh (n.) -- literally 'far-ache'. the opposite of homesickness, the desire to go far away. i guess wanderlust is similar, but that is also a german word, and this is more painful and visceral

schweigen (v./n.) -- the act of not speaking. silence, but more deliberate. the palpable feeling that people are withholding their voice.

kaputtreparieren (to brake repair)

It's similar to verschlimmnessern, but usually used when something is a little broken, and by trying to repair it, it was actually made worse.

I feel we don't talk about this moment in "Mabel's Guide to Color" enough. This is the smile of a very intelligent 12 yo that probably knows exactly how powerful this beam of light is and that this is a very bad idea. This is the same 12 yo that thinks revenge feels awesome, and when he thought someone stole his spaghetti said "this is a dark day" very ominously. This is, once again, the same 12 yo that has dealt with Grunkle Stan's ribbing all summer.

The first time you eat it you won't have any antibodies formed in reaction to it so nothing happens, but after you've eaten it the first time its kind of like. Vaccine: evil version. Your body forms the antibodies and so recognises it next time, each time you eat it and it recognises it you're spinning the wheel on if that'll be the straw on the camels back triggering the haemolysis
