Firstly sorry for so many ooc posts recently.
Second, I apologize for being less active but after what I have seen and delt with in this space it is hard.
Some people don't know internet or fandom etiquette. Or human kindness at this point.
Characters should not be shit on for being dynamic or nuanced. When it's a cannon you don't bat an eye but when an oc isn't flat you hate them.
Cal isn't the nicest at face value. He thrives using sarcasm and some think that makes him mean. It's a coping mechanism. I have worked in the healthcare field myself, it's not cute, everyone doesn't bounce into work with a smile. It is hard on you and everyone copes differently. Most people I've seen fall on to vices and/or crude humor and sarcasm.
I am tired of watering down Cal so others can stomach him more easily. He is sarcastic and weird and tends to be introverted. But he cares. He will care for another coworker when they end up the patient. He will stand between a patient and harm. He makes sure everyone on his shift eats at some point and keeps water at their station. He is dynamic. He will not be 2d to make you feel better.
You show your biases constantly even if you don't think you do. You eat up flamboyant gay characters and tough macho men. You coddle autistic characters. But when the character doesn't fit in those boxes the way you want them to you clutch your pearls.
I'm not here to call anyone out, if any of this resonates with you then you need to do some internal reflection.
