DIY Hawaiian themed house party.
If you’re looking to host a Hawaiian themed party at home or wherever it may be, here are a few ideas that might inspire you! Or not, thats ok too!
To create the signs I recycled some old cardboard left over from the ‘moving boxes’ and invested in some emulsion tester pots from B&Q (only £1 a tester pot!). I also bought a pack of assorted paint brushes and used Pinterest, Google & Tumblr for ideas!
The Bamboo was very reasonably priced from Home Bargains... i think it was about £4, and you get a lot! I used sellotape to fix it to the breakfast bar (or Tiki Bar!) and used the excess to create a giant ‘photo frame’ for fun pictures! The frame is hanging on the light in the picture, which obviously was taken down and held for photographs! I also made some props for the photo station, using the excess cardboard, paint & bamboo!
How to recreate the ‘Sunset Tiki Bar’:
1. Cardboard, Paint (yellow, red, green & brown), 1 black permanent marker pen & sellotape.
2. Palm tree themed balloons (eBay or your local crafts store)
3. Bamboo & lots of sellotape!! (Home Bargains)
4. A smaller piece of cardboard for the ‘cocktail or mocktail’ menu
5. Obviously an assortment of drinks that you and your friends/family enjoy!
How to make Hawaiian themed cocktails:
Organic Pina Colada
1. Make sure you have a blender and an adult to operate the drill & hammer.
You will need:
- 2 whole pineapples
- 2 Coconuts
- Honey
- Ice cubes
- Cocktail shaker/mixer (I picked one up cheaply from Home Bargains)
- Coconut Rum (I used Kokomo)
Start by making sure your work surface is nice and clean.
Coconut milk: Now, I had my Grandad drill the holes through the three eyes of the coconut because I was too scared to operate the drill! He’s a lot more experienced with tools than I am! Then, after I drained the coconuts, I smashed it open using a hammer. To get the inside of the coconut out I used a knife to quarter the sections and then used a spoon to get them out (this is quite tricky and will take a while!). Once all the coconut white (endosperm) was out I put it into the blender and used the coconut water and some still water to achieve the right consistency. I blended for approx. 3 minutes (add some honey for extra sweetness) and then poured the blended coconut into a jug through a sieve. You will get a mushy mess left in the sieve but don’t fear, just pour it back into the blender add more water and repeat the process until you have enough coconut milk! I then put cling film over the top of the jug and stored it in the fridge.
For the pineapple juice: Wash the two pineapples and remove all the skin, chop up into chunks (kept some left over to add to the cocktails). Add the pineapple chunks to the blender and add some water. Blend for a few minutes until the mix appears smooth. Then pour through a strainer into a jug. Done! Store in the fridge until its time to mix the cocktail!
Time to mix?!
Grab your cocktail shaker and add a fair amount of ice; you want to fill 1/2 with coconut milk and 1/2 with pineapple juice then two small chunks of your leftover pineapple (stop there if you want a mocktail!) and then 2 shots of coconut rum! Shake it up and your done!!
