A little NaNo pep-talk
NaNoWriMo doesnât work for everyone. The format. The pressure. The focus on quantity no matter what. If it doesnât work for you, thatâs okay. Youâre not a failure. Youâre not broken. Youâre not ânot a real writer.â
50,000 is a pretty arbitrary number, all things considered. You donât need to be a slave to it. Remember, any words you write this month are words you didnât have before. Thatâs the most important takeaway. You, sitting there behind your monitor or scribbling away in your notebook, have committed to writing new words this month.
Thatâs amazing. Youâre amazing. Whether you end up with 500, 5000, or 50000, youâre creating something from nothing. Embrace that. Love it.
But above all, love yourself.Â
A writing challenge shouldnât make you sick. It shouldnât be your only focus for an entire month. You still need to make time to eat and go for walks and see your friends and laugh and spend time with your pets or your loved ones. Writing isnât a punishment. It shouldnât feel like torture. See, the last thing you want to do is burn out and spend the next three or six or twelve months recovering. If a challenge like this blankets you in panic or anxiety? You donât have to do adhere to the arbitrary rules. You can make it work for you.
I think NaNo can be a great motivator, in that you see a lot of fellow writers diving into their craft. You see the enthusiasm and excitement surrounding new (or continuingâyou donât have to follow that rule, either) projects. Thereâs commiseration and cooperation and compassion. Writers so often work alone; it can be very empowering to be part of somethingâeven though youâre all creating your own projectsâwith so many others.
Iâve won NaNo before. Iâve crashed hard before. And what Iâve learned is that it is more important to listen to yourself than to listen to others. If youâre tired, rest. If youâre sick, take care of yourself. Eat enough. Sleep enough. Donât forget to move around.
And remember: whether itâs one word or sixteen-hundred-and-sixty-seven or ten thousandâyouâve won. Whether you write one day this month or thirty, youâve won. Youâre creating something that wasnât there before. Youâre winning.
Iâm always commenting on Tarysandeâs posts to agree in greater detail. Itâs probably because weâve known each other Too Bloody Long (TM). One year I had to make the conscious decision to walk away from Nanowrimo. The novel I was working on was not coming easily, and I had to stay up into the early morning hours, when I focus best, to get my daily words written. But I also work a day job, and am now (sadly) of an age where I need sleep. The less sleep I got, the less functional I was. The less functional I was, the harder the words came, the later I had to stay up, the less sleep I got... I think you can see where this is going. I had to walk away from Nano that year for the sake of my health. I felt like a failure at the time, but in retrospect it was absolutely the correct decision. I have completed Nano several times. (My book Hollins Hill was a NanoNovel from many years ago.) Iâve done it by the rules. Iâve done it to work on finishing something already in progress. Iâve done it to work on many smaller works.I find it useful as a tool--sometimes. Use it--or not--as it works for you. I have learnt, over the years, that many professional and successful writers donât write at Nano pace. Or anywhere near Nano pace. Some donât write every day. Many donât start on page one and write through to the end. Some write really scanty first drafts that get filled out in editing. And so on and so forth. Thereâs no wrong way to write, as long as you are writing. Itâs a matter of discovering what works for you and that particular project, because sometimes what works changes from project to project. As an aside, if youâre like me and find one of the most useful parts of Nano are the word tracking tools, check out Pacemaker, which allows you to customize word goal targets to fit your schedule and work habits. And what am I doing this month? Iâm not sure if Iâm doing Nano or not. Iâve been struggling creatively for a while now, and so Iâm taking the month to work on something fun. If it turns out Iâm within Nano targets, Iâll probably sign up officially; if not, I wonât bother, because at this point of time itâs not worth stressing myself. I need to take a break from the grind and just rediscover what I love about telling stories. Besides, Iâm not under contract or anything, so if I want to write about fictitious European countries, I bloody well can.Â
Good stuff.
Guys, I edit professionally. This list is legit. Incorporating these suggestions before you hire an editor will save you A LOT of money. Even if you did these and nothing else, youâd see significant overall improvement in your work.
That said, you donât have to overthink these things when youâre writing a first draft. If you write, âshe said angrilyâ in a first draft, you can always revisit the phrasing in a second draft. I mention this because overthinking style can lead to a loss of momentum, and losing momentum is why so many people never finish a draft. Give yourself permission to write fast, write messy or ugly, and edit your draft into beauty later.
As long as you write it, you can fix it.Â
You canât fix a blank page.* *Other than by writing on it, of course.Â
shoutout to this Mass Effect fic which implies that between now and the year 2183, the Vancouver Canucks never won a single Stanley Cup
@janiemcpants LOOK HOW MANY NOTES THIS HAS. YOUâRE FAMOUS.
look, I love the Canucks but this is legitÂ
My burning question: If the Canucks havenât won the cup in all that time, how many times did Vancouver riot over them losing?Â
Update: have claimed victory on the war against dialogue tags. All the âdemandedâsâ and âgrowledâsâ and âechoedâsâ and especially the âhissedâsâ are now shackled in my dungeon. The âsaidâsâ and âaskedâsâ have been let free for good behaviour.Â
Have battled to a draw with filler words. The treaty was just signed. However, am now fighting a losing campaign against passive voice. Sigh.Â
Today I am on a rampage against dialogue tags. I shall destroy them all(, for they are offensive in my sight.Â
*Not all. Some of have survived the purge. Most havenât.Â
