A large, easy-to-read cover. Pull out the record, drop the needle—and off we went. The technology may have had its quirks back then, but there was neither a blue screen displaying a 16-digit error code (because the thing didn’t have a screen at all), nor—at least in the technical sense—anything resembling digital rights management. And even during the breaks between tracks, you knew the thing was working—thanks to the crackling and popping.

which still looks modern today, with its open and spacious design, embodies what people—at least at that time—envisioned as the open-minded spirit of a university. Both qualities are rather rare to find today.
