āThe LEGO Movie was my favorite movie of 2014, but it strikes me that the main character was male, because I feel like in our current culture, he HAD to be. The whole point of Emmett is that heās the most boring average person in the world. Itās impossible to imagine a female character playing that role, because according to our pop culture, if sheās female sheās already SOMEthing, because sheās not male. The baseline is male. The average person is male. You can see this all over but itās weirdly prevalent in childrenās entertainment. Why are almost all of the muppets dudes, except for Miss Piggy, whoās a parody of femininity? Why do all of the Despicable Me minions, genderless blobs, have boy names? I love the story (which I read on Wikipedia) that when the director of The Brave Little Toaster cast a woman to play the toaster, one of the guys on the crew was so mad he stormed out of the room. Because he thought the toaster was a man. A TOASTER. The character is a toaster. I try to think about that when writing new charactersā is there anything inherently gendered about what this character is doing? Or is it a toaster?ā
ā Bojack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg commenting on how weird gendered defaults in entertainment are, and why we should think twice about them. Excerpted from this longer original post. (via 360degreesasthecrowflies)
stop fireworks. just do not do them. no fireworks allowed, not ever, not even once. stop it.
I feel the need to tell everyone that the reddit lacqueristas aren't feeling very celebratory for the 4th right now (rightfully and obviously), so instead of red/white/blue nails, everyone's doing DC reflecting pool algae shitshow green nails for the 4th of July instead š

Someone linked me this beautiful poster, and I'm just really impressed.
My contribution:
#as someone who was in graphic design classes for four years the design above makes complete total sense#the text is arranged so that the biggest and colored text is where you go to first#then the text in the middle#reading from up to down as thatās how people typically observe things#zero clue what op is even complaining about
fascinated by this. seriously? you think it makes total sense? read the tags in the notes, and note how many people totally failed to realize the "intended" pattern was even possible. yes, people tend to start with a brightly-colored thing, but once they start reading, they tend to read nearby text next rather than jumping around.
so once you've read "it is against the law to", your brain isn't coming to the poster fresh looking for the most brightly colored text it can find, or looking for something on the same circle but oriented the opposite direction with respect to the circle's path; it's going to look for a new line of text that starts just below the line of text it just read, and get "keep alcohol out of", and keep doing that, getting "it is against the law to keep alcohol out of the hands of youth supply alcohol to minors".
if you don't follow that, well, look at the mockup i did, and note how many people read it as "graphic passion is my design", because top-down wins over outside-in.
this is one of those things where if your academic model of the thing is not predicting the real-world outcome, it's very important to recognize that since graphic design is about communication, and communication is about what people actually get from seeing the work, if lots of people are "reading it wrong", that means it is designed wrong. doesn't matter that you have an abstract theory about how they "should" read it.
same vibes as the color theory discourse about the blood trails in the hospital really.
i think they should put doctor who in the public domain and let us all start taking cracks at it on youtube
do you live in seattle (the american city)?
yes
no
please reblog to get this poll out of my bubble, i want reach
so ive been meaning to do this poll for a while because my hypothesis is that seattle is the most Tumblr city, likely in the entire world. tumblr has a huge american majority userbase obviously, but just for comparison going forward, only 0.22% of the american population lives in seattle. as of this reblog, this poll is showing 4% of respondents are seattleites. given, this isnt scientific at all, because my blog just has a lot of seattle connections and seattle followers, but it's still an impressive bias
Stop liking my old ugly horizon fanarts guys. Hereās a fresh one
Children near a magical wood catching bugs and their family are like. Please do not catch pixies and small fae and bring them into our home. They are sentient and they are intelligent
And the kids are like "but they get into our bug traps" and "we didn't catch him he followed us home"
And their parents are like. Please i do not believe that 6 fucking pixies smuggled themselves into our garage on the underside of your bicycle saddle and then set up shop in the old dolls house. These are living beings they're not toys it's not kind to treat them like this
And the kids are like we are NOT treating them like anything you said we're not allowed to trap them and they always get into our traps so we always run away when they see us and then they follow us and get inside our backpacks and stuff
And the parents are like
Stop lying!!!
And then they set up wildlife cams and not only can pixies apparently do all of that and are very desperate to hang out with these human kids (who have fun life-sized toys and are covered in wonderful things like glitter and are a free source of fresh bugs and pop tart crumbs)
But they can also like. Fully just pick locks and shit.
Setting up little cameras and having to come to terms with the fact that not only are these small fae initiating every interaction with the kids but have also taken their cat's side in the war against pigeons and keep riding it into battle
The fae quickly realise the camera is a camera, and just as quickly invent silent movies
Each intertitle card has been crafted from words cut out of other writing, so a piece of paper looking like a ransom demand states "BuT Hoo wil SAVE the Dams3l?" is pulled away to reveal a doll tied to train tracks

When my students talk over me I do this bit where I quietly tell them Iām really shy and to please let me talk and somehow it works.
Me, literally a performing arts teacher who teaches them how to be confident and loud: guys wait Iām really shy š„ŗ guys be niceys to me š„ŗ Iām just a little guy š„ŗ
My students???? Every time????: woah guys shutup sheās literally shy
Why did we ever start yelling at kids when we could just let them be part of a bit, which is a kidās favorite thing?
