Jaebeom admired his reflection in the mirror, straightening the lapels of his tuxedo. He felt confident and stylish, but he couldn’t shake the feeling that he wasn’t quite ready to walk his sister down the aisle or stand at the end of the aisle for his fiancée.

“Stop fidgeting,” the old man who owned the store instructed, pinning the jacket for alterations. “You’ve been doing this since you were a boy. If you don’t stop, I’ll use this needle on you.” It was true; Mr. Jung had been dressing him, his brother, and father since he could remember.

Jaebeom, feeling embarrassed, chuckled. “You’re right. I apologize,” he said, his voice reminiscent of a child. “You’ve met Lisa. I have to ensure that this is flawless.”

“And the lucky lady?” Mr. Jung asked. “How did you know she was the one?”

For the first time since their fitting appointment, Jaebeom broke into a smile. “Haeyoon?” he whispered. “She’s a dream come true. Funny, intelligent, and courageous,” he listed a few qualities that had captivated him when he first met the extraordinary girl from another world. “After our first date, when we said goodnight, I felt her absence in my chest. I can’t imagine my life without her.” He was aware that his words sounded like those of a lovesick fool, but for Haeyoon, he didn’t care.

The elderly man smiled at the man in front of him, recalling the boy from years ago. “I’m delighted that you’ve found such a loving partner. You truly deserve it.”

Since his return home, sleep had become a foreign concept for Taeyong. Time seemed to have slowed down, and now it was dragging on. After swearing the time was 11:38 pm for five hours, he couldn’t take it anymore. Slowly and quietly, Taeyong dressed and slipped out of his home… the only place he had been in… he didn’t know how long.

He didn’t bother grabbing his keys. It was a beautiful night, with not a single cloud in the sky. He set off down the road for some fresh air, his hands tucked into his pockets and his hat pulled low over his eyes, even though the sun wasn’t shining.

The walk to the park, nestled in the heart of the cookie-cutter neighborhood, was brief. He had visited this park countless times before, yet he found himself unsure of how to measure his days anymore.

Taeyong found an empty bench and settled in, closing his eyes and asking into the darkness, “What’s it going to be?”

The next day should be celebrated with friends. He’s 30 years old. For so long, he was certain he wouldn’t see it, and he was right. Ironically, the same day he should be celebrating with friends was the same day his friends said goodbye to him—or they thought they did.

Only a handful of people knew his secret, and he was certain none of them were eager to celebrate his return, his life, or him. His chest constricted and strangled his life giving organ.

“Happy birthday me.”

“No! Ky-Changkyun, no!” Lisa laughed and squealed, desperately trying to break free from her fiancé’s embrace. The hours had flown by, and they had been lost in a blissful embrace, savoring each other’s company in countless ways. With a playful glint in her eye, she snatched the pink satin and lace robe draped over the chair and slipped it on, gracefully tying it around her waist.

How was she supposed to resist the hungry look in his eyes or the perfect pout on his lips. Cake. Cake. Cake. Lisa tried to keep her head straight and on task.

She vanished behind the door for a fleeting moment before returning with a tray of various cakes and fillings, determined to find the perfect combination.

“Honestly, I don’t think we should-" the words quickly fell silent when she fucked up and saw Changkyun in bed. His hair was still imperfectly perfect from dragging her fingers through it. Cake. Cake. Cake. Shit. Fuck it. She plucked his phone from his hands and tossed it across the bed.

Lisa straddled his lap and gave him the sternest look she could muster. “Cake. Open,” she fed him forkfuls of cake with kisses between each flavor.

More than half the cake was left on the tray, while the other half had been used in an unexpected manner, leaving the wedding cake’s flavor undecided. “Perhaps next time, we should consider baking it at the bakery,” she chuckled, licking the remaining icing from her fiancé’s neck. “I don’t see us accomplishing anything else today.”
