once a cruise ship is deemed inferior, it has 3 options. It can either
1. Try to repair itself to meet new standards (which costs millions of dollars
2. Go to a cruise ship retirement home, which must be paid for by the cruise ship itself, and not the company that owns them
3. Or, where most go. The scrapping yard. Where they get salvaged for any parts that could be used. A horrible fate, but most cruise ships come to accept it.
Many times though, cruise ships are forcefully sent to scrapping yards. Even if they no longer do service for their parent company, or retire, their parent company still has complete control over them. And usually, scrapping has a lot of benefits.
Now if a cruise ship is either selected or chooses to go to a cruise ship graveyard, the scrapping process begins. It starts out by putting the cruise ships out of their misery in a painless way. (Lethal injection. Donโt worry it kills them within seconds)
Once theyโre dead, the cruise ships then get all biological parts removed. This includes the mouth, eyes, bones, flesh, muscles, etc. The biological parts are then sent to factoryโs where they are turned into feed for carnivorous animals in the cars world.
After all biological parts are removed, the process of removing the interior of the ship begins. Itโs a generally smooth process, but things can go wrong. (The 2003 Concordia sunrise incident) The 2003 Concordia sunrise incident: basically when a group of looters attempted to loot anything remaining inside the ship Concordia sunrise. Unfortunately, due to the ship being highly unstable, the ground beneath them fell. They were on the top deck. There were no survivors, and it halted scrapping of the ship for a year.
Now once the interior is removed, any technological parts and components are removed to make scrapping safer. This includes gps systems, engines, wiring/cabling, sewage systems, etc. this entire process takes around 2 years. (Thanks to the marvels of modern cranes, and safer yet more efficient ways of scrapping!) and once all of that is done, the husk of the ship is cut into pieces, to be sold to junkyards and repurposed.
Thankfully, lethal injection is the quickest and most painless way of killing the ships. (Except for the 2019 SS Latvia incident) sometimes things go wrong in the scrapping process. The SS Latvia had to spend around 3 days in constant agony due to the lethal injection not working properly. The SS Latvia was finally put out of her misery after locals decided to mercy kill her, due to the scrapping yard and government officials, aswell as her parent company not doing anything. The locals say that if you hunt an animal and donโt immediately kill it, the spirit of Latvia will come to haunt you for years.
