Baby Horse is a Belgian-style quadrupel ale  brought to us by 21st Amendment Brewery out of San Francisco as part of their latest an Insurrection series. Originally it was only available on draft in their pub but, luckily for those of us on the east coast, it’s being distributed throughout the states thanks to popular demand. I picked it up at my local brew provider (shoutout to Brewtopia in Keene, NH) who has an amazing collection, but you can find Baby Horse anywhere 21st Amendment beer is sold. That is, any beer distributor worth their salt. I grabbed a single for around $3.50, so I can’t speak on behalf of what a six pack might run you but I can tell you this: It’s worth it.

Legend has it (by legend, I mean the side of the can) that it got its name from having a malt bill (that is, all the grainy goodness that gets added to the recipe before the hops) as weighty as a baby horse. I love a good Belgian, so that was enough to hook me. Unfortunately, this guy had to wait it out in my fridge for quite a while. I don’t know about you, but after getting home from a late shift with an empty stomach, a beer with 9.5% alc./vol is less like a relaxing way to unwind and more like anaesthesia.

I finally cracked it open on a gorgeous 80 degree day after wrapping up some yard work and it couldn’t have been better. You’re probably thinking that with 9.5% acl/vol this “baby horse” might just kick like a stallion, but you’d be wrong. It’s got enough flavor to carry that kind of content; nice and dark with notes of caramel, aged fruit and an almost syrupy sweetness despite its full-bodied mouthfeel and almost no bitterness at all. It’s no light beer, but it’s still perfect for a summer night. If Belgians are your style or you like a good malty ale, this is it.

This is just a place for me to highlight some great beers.Listen, I don’t know all of the official brewing terms or the nitty gritty details of the brewing and tasting process. I barely scraped by in high school chemistry, so I leave all that to the experts. There’s a bit of discomfort around people like me in the brewing industry, especially when it comes to  reviewing sites like Beer Advocate or Ratebeer.com. These can be handy tools for some drinkers, but it can be disheartening for the brewers who put their heart and soul into the process and see the results being ripped apart or just glossed over by people outside of the industry who don’t understand its complexities.

Out of respect for brewers, you’ll only find positive reviews from me. If a beer is featured here, it’s because I liked it and I want to talk about it- simple as that. I’m not out to discourage anyone or change any minds. I just like beer.
