It also critiques how that kind of performative politics collapses when removed from comfort. These same people likely couldn’t handle the reality of the conditions they claim to understand or empathize with.

The original song includes a racial slur in one line (“bragging how you know how the n***** feel cold, and the slum’s got so much soul…”), in the context of someone trying to impress the others with their knowledge of black culture and racial injustice.

Former frontman Jello Biafra has said he became increasingly uncomfortable with that lyric over time, and in current live performances (such as this one with his band Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medicine) he replaces it with “blacks.”

There is discourse about whether changing the lyric neuters the song or not. Some argue it softens the satire, others see it as a necessary change given the word’s harmful impact, and others still see the Dead Kennedys as a mere shock rock act and think it needs that word to work.

Personally, I think the altered version actually makes more sense for the satire, because the target is performative liberalism. Why would someone trying to appear socially conscious lean on explicit slurs in the first place?

I think in this cover version, Serj Tankian (who I am not a massive fan of in general, but still) put in the best word, as “brothers” conveys a sense of false familiarity and intimacy.
