Zhu's army had made camp for the night a mere two days march out of Dadu. In the shadows of his tent as he prepared for bed, Chang Yuchun still had to stop himself from being startled by the Radiant King's golden armour where it stood on a stand waiting for him to don it in the morning as he had every day since Zhu had summoned the armourer to adjust it for him. I can't wear your armour! he had protested, and Zhu had smiled, that ghastly smile without joy he had worn since Xu Da's death.

'You have to,' he had said. 'The Yuan need to think I'm leading my army. You can't be worried you'll disgrace it, you're a much better fighter than I am. Think what you'll do for my reputation!'

Yuchun had grown used to wearing it, but he had never grown used to seeing it like this, as if it were his, its golden lustre in the lamplight cold company compared to Zhu, to Xu Da. Zhu had trusted him utterly, when he gave Yuchun his army. Yuchun knew, with absolute certainty, that he had no temptation not to give it back, not to -

'General!'

Then his expression went slack as he fell to the ground dead. Ouyang took the black metal bow off his spirit armor and turned back to face the wolf, looming exactly where he’d expected to find it.”

Anyway, remember how Esen had Ouyang raised up from slave to personal bodyguard and then head of all his guards?

Her consolation is that it’s still her funeral. She is next of kin. Blood. Ouyang got Esen alive, but she gets him dead, and one of those things will last much, much longer than the other. Yeah, it’s a hollow victory, but what in Baoxiang’s life hasn’t been?
