Excerpts from Your Soul is a River
'My darling, he is just a boy.
How can he possibly begin to appreciate the constellationsĀ you leave in your wake, or the stardust in your bones,Ā when he has yet to realise just what it means to be in loveĀ with a girl like you?ā
I gone did a photoshoot
I cannot believe Curvy Kateās audacity to outright steal the work of a high school student for some insipid marketing message.

wow this is perfect to mention in my dissertation about how feminist critique is incorporated and emptied of its radical meaning by marketers, (2 days before it is due).
A Cathartic Note on Rape Culture
(Trying to shake off the ickys and the silent rage). The lack of empathy and compassion among many men disgusts me and cries of 'not all men' are frustrating and detract from the heart-wrenching issue which is the common stories of trauma from so, so many women. Every year (4 years) that I have been on an anti-rape march in one town in New Zealand (where 1 in 4 women is a survivor) there is at least one different man who shows up to yell 'we love rape!', call women on the march 'sluts' or try and have a serious argument with the organisers over women's reponsibility for rape (in front of multiple survivors of rape!). This year has been no different. Although I am not a survivor myself, the accumulation of years of casual groping, rape threats and verbal abuse from men and boys has the effect of producing enough anxiety to have me triggered by the actions of these men. Imagine what it is like for a woman living every day with the trauma of rape and who has had to find immense courage to join a march to scream loudly for her rights. Let me be clear: men abusing women at an anti-rape march is rape culture in action. It is the obvious intimidation these men feel from women's energetic and furious calls for a world free of violence that indicates that they identify on some level with the men we are protesting against. Whether or not they are actually rapists, the compulsion they feel to abuse women or debate our right to safety is symptomatic of how far we have still to go. Although we know that only a minority of men actively abuse and harass women, these men are extremely vocal, such that it feels like they are everywhere. The majority of men, however, are silent and it is this silence which encourages other men to believe that they are supported and valid in their contempt for women. I think the reason why many men are silent in the face of their peer's casual sexism is that they do not connect their friend's sexist attitudes with women's lived experiences of multiple violations by men. They are not mutually exclusive and anyone with a working knowledge of the sexual violence sector knows the role that attitudes play in encouraging sexual violence. Mainly through indirectly normalising and condoning violence against women. Jokes and the attitudes they harbour are manifestations of a culture lacking empathy for survivors, this in turn feeds into the resistance to change that feminist activists encounter. This is acutely obvious on the internet, where men make denigrating and dismissive trolling replies to women sharing stories of abuse. Suggesting they do not have a clue or a care as to the workings of trauma and the prevalence of it. I want to finish by saying that feminist anger is directly proportional to the denial and resistance from misogynist men, not to our hatred of all men. The necessity of being an annoying, vocal radical feminist is to match the violent resistance we encounter by speaking out about women's experiences.
look at this fragile delicate flower of a man look at how precarious his value and identity is wonder at the marvel that is masculinity
This makes me want to cry blood.
This is a prime example of patriarchy at work. He canāt handle holding a fucking purse for 2 fucking seconds before he has to bust out his āman bagā so he can feel validated by his male peers who are rooting him on for not wanting to be feminine. Is his ego and sense of masculinity so fragile he canāt possibly brush it with the slightest amount of femininity before he crashes and burns??
Not to mention the fact that a symbol of feminity is being equated to a literal piece of shit.
or maybe he just doesnāt want to hold a fucking purse? god fucking damn it.
Youāre right. We shouldnāt for anything in the world everĀ thinkĀ about why he wouldnāt want to hold a purse, why he would feel itās reasonable to drop it like itās radioactive and then treat it both like toxic waste and a shameful secret, or why an audience of men would applaud him for treating it in this way instead of just holding the thing his wife asked him to hold.
Masculinity is too fragile to withstand investigation. We must protect it at all costs.
My partner is always willing to not only hope my purse, but carry it around on his shoulder. A few guy friends make fun of him for it, but heās comfortable enough with his masculinity to not care. Plus, he looks fabulous ;)

My friend Cecilia Winterfox wrote this as a comment response to an article I wrote about Emma Watson and #HeForShe and I thought it was so right-on that I wanted to give it a post all of its own.
She articulates so much of my irritation with this fixation on contradicting man-hating...

I design clothes because I donāt want women to look all innocent and naĆÆveā¦I want woman to look strongerā¦I donāt like women to be taken advantage ofā¦I donāt like men whistling at women in the street. I think they deserve more respect. I like men to keep their distance from women, I like men to be stunned by an entrance. Iāve seen a woman get nearly beaten to death by her husband. I know what misogyny is ⦠I want people to be afraid of the women I dress.
