i’m thinking about rachel saying that neolution is a means to an end back in s4, i’m thinking of rachel using neolution for her own gains in obspec, i’m thinking about rachel trumping leekie and evie and susan and westmorland’s ideologies with her own complete lack of caring…i’m thinking about how all these scientists spent their whole life grooming rachel for this and at the end of everything she doesn’t care. what it would be like to have orphan black, a show that’s tried so hard to be about scientific potential – what it would be like to have an antagonist who has a scientific agenda but is just motivated by ruthlessness. what it would be like to not throw constant scientific fastballs at me, new genes and monsters in the forest, but just have rachel twisting the scientific knife to hurt sarah. that’s it. just to be our perfect villain. just to hurt sarah. all of this science, this house of cards ob has built for itself out of drawn blood and kira’s fingernails – sharpened to a villain-knife, turned against sarah the way it has been, vaguely, ominously, since sarah found that probe inside of her in season 1.

i keep thinking about what it would have been like if we’d gotten to see rachel be angry. what it would have meant to see a female villain motivated by snarling aggression, a woman who’s just – angry! without that anger being sexual or motivated by a man’s betrayal. a woman with a knife. rachel with a knife. rachel with her anger and her ambitions as knives, and orphan black telling us: yes, this is what it was always going to be. we brought in rachel in the season 1 finale and we set her up as sarah’s foil – she fought sarah during season 2 but she wasn’t equipped then. not enough had been taken from her. now everything has been taken from her, and she’s gotten it back, and she’s at the top, and we’ve been waiting to tell this story for four seasons. we wanted to tell a story about sisterhood and we’re going to tell that story by pitting it against its complete absence. it was always supposed to be rachel. this is hers, remember? her time.
