The Candy Man:
This song is used to describe Willy Wonka. Willy Wonka owns a magical candy factory that mass produces candy. He gives away joy and sunshine in the form of candy, but at a price. It's consumerism, but painted in a sweet tasty allure
But the original reason I picked this song is because I thought it sounded like Howdy
There's A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow:
On a surface level this song sounds innocent. It's about hopeful thinking and achieving your dreams right? Well if we look at the context for this song, you'll see that this was written for the Disney attraction Carousel of Progress. Carousel of Progress is an animatronic moving show that shows the progress of technology. This attraction was sponsored by General Electric. This isn't a song about your hopes and dreams, this is a love letter to industrialism!!! The dreams are about invention of technology and mass production. That's the dream. The great big beautiful tomorrow is capitalism.
Detroit:
This is from the niche Disney movie musical The Happiest Millionaire. This song is about the main man love interest and his aspirations to live in Detroit Michigan to be involved in the advancement of cars. He's passionate about cars and making them bigger and better. This song is genuine and joyful. But General Motors is just another product of consumerism. One of the biggest products of the industrial revolution.
Wells Fargo Wagon:
This catchy tune from The Music Man is about the Wells Fargo Wagon coming down the street with packages. A cute little song about buying stuff and having it delivered to you in a wagon. Goods and services. Isn't consumerism fun? Don't you love ordering from Amazon? /sarcasm
I won't blame you for singing along though, I can't resist either lmao
Cutting Edge:
JUMPING INTO THE EARLY 80s. This song is from The Brave Little Toaster. This song isn't coy about its message like the other songs. This is about companies pushing new cutting edge technology to BUY BUY BUY. YOU NEED MORE. MORE. MORE. MORE. From the prospective of the main characters in this story, this isn't an advertisement, this is a THREAT. This technology is flaunting their cutting edge status and affirming their obsolescence. Which comes back to them in the song Worthless at the Junkyard.
This song is a bit different from the others in tone. But my argument for it fitting into Howdy Pillar is because the aesthetic this song has is also seen in the Welcome Home merch store. That also coincidentally shares the fact they're using cutting edge 80s technically to sell these products. It explains why this exists within the universe of Welcome Home it's the late 70s and computers are new and exciting!!!
