T'Pring saying she didn't want to be "the consort of a legend" was the kindest possible way to call Spock a controversial half-breed.

His father represents the harshest of Vulcan tradition, which, as stated before, is built upon the grounds of sexism and heteronormativity (a deliberate writing choice, given the author). Spock denying his father's wishes and going to starfleet is the literary equivalent of a boy running away from his homophobic dad to go live in the gayest part of LA with his boyfriend.

(Kudos to Sturgeon for actively adding this flavor to the writing of Star Trek. Fucking genius queen)

His mother, on the other hand, is happy for him but frustrated that he isn't happy for himself. Why isn'the happy? Because of his ingrained need to deny himself joy based upon his father's judgement and traditions. Despite running away, he's still trapped in the closet.
