[Theyβre standing at the vault entrance, halfway through wiring the keypad to the new door. Three mechanical arms make up for the bad one staying under his coat, helping his good arm with careful precision through his goggles.]
@r3tr0-s
[Retro appears behind Don, tapping on his Good shoulder. Don should've picked up on him, so he probably wouldn't jump. Well, At least he thinks so.]
Boo.
[Don tilts his head, not flinching but taking a second to finish what he's doing before he reacts.] Mmmhm. One moment.
[They turn to Retro, flipping their goggles up before squinting down at him, mechanical arms drawing back but not retracting.] Yyyyes. Retro? What do you need?
[He glances at their arm.]
Ssoo, I remember seeing that your arm was, once again, not in peak condition since the last time I was here. Mind telling how it got this way again?
β¦ [Dammit. Why did he make a medical bot.
Donβs eyes move to the wall, biting their cheek and standing up straighter, shifting their cloak more over their arm.] β¦Nnnnno, my arm is-
[A twitch of their fingers makes them give up immediately, the pain just irritating them. They let the cloak shift away from the arm.] Yes, yes, fine. First it was Bishop, then it was- uhhh, I crash-landed during Novaβs fight. Several other misadventures and mistreatments later.
[Retro makes a not so happy expression.]
Sighs, And have you tried anything towards- you know- actually caring for it while I was out of commision?
I havenβt been using it. Because itβs unusable. It was in a sling for a whileβ¦ and then out of the sling for a longer whileβ¦
Iβm a mutant, Iβve got super healing abilities and whatever and I have work to do, Retro, seriously, have you seen my to-do list- [he already knows heβs lost the argument. They just have to put up a fight anyway. For the sake of saving face. Their shoulders have hiked up half-heartedly.]
Oh yeah? And how have those "super healing abilities" been working out for ya? [He crosses his arms, shifting his weight to his another foot. He is rather annoyed by his creator's lack of self-preservation.]
Ughhhhh. It has healed, just. Wrong. Iβve been putting off re-breaking it and trying again. [He is also annoyed by this situation. He would really this arm have not been broken in the first place.]
Grr. [His screen switches to ">:["]
Listen, which I know you're great at doing, less so following through but still. If you continue to not listen to the very strict guidelines of-you know- medicine, you will lose your arm.
You listenining? No listen, arm go bye bye, okay?
I-
[Their expression becomes very tight. They donβt respond, going still.
Amputation? Sure, theyβd considered the possibility. Actually, as soon as Bishop had broken it the panicked thought had crossed their mind, fearing the lack of medical attention in his captivity. But his mind had amputated the worry itself, forcing the thought out of his mind long past when he had gotten back to the base.
Now, bringing it up again, forcing that distant thought back to the forefront of his mind, he thinks of the dozens of amputations heβs performed, of the piles of prosthetics heβs designed, and the burning pain in his arm, and furrows his brow, unhurt shoulder tensing. It should be easier. Why isnβt it easier?
They look away from Retro, pinching their eyes and sighing.]
Fine, fine, Retro, whatever. What, pray tell, do you insist on? Iβll do it, fine.
And donβt- speak to me like that.
[Retro looks through the files on broken arm repair and such.]
Well, first off. Obviously, we are going to have to re-break it since it can't stay like that. Then you might have to go through surgery to re-align the bone if need be. Other than that, should just be a simple cast and sling. And OF COURSE, no use of it, so it can properly heal.
Ugh. [Don moves to cross his arms, stops when it hurts.] Ugh. Fine. I can break it myself. I'll see if it needs surgery. And I'll make the cast and sling myself. And I won't use it. I've been managing fine, anyway.
Yes?
[Retro looks him up and down. He wants to say something different but he refrains.]
Sure⦠Hey but like isn't that all my job, shouldn't I be doing most of that. >:C
Do you want to break my arm?
[Retro blinks at them, just staring for a few moments. He should want to, but that just sounds wrong. Especially when it's Don.]
[The mouth on his screen opens, like he wants to answer, but he doesn't know how he should.]
That's what I thought. I'll be oh so generous and spare us both my trip to the medbay and I'll do it myself, thank you very much, Retro. Though I'll be here if you change your mind and decide you would love to break it.
Is there anything else you wanted to talk to me about, then?
[He shifts his arm back under his cloak, and his extra arms start twitching towards the keypad again.]
[Retro thinks about it.] I guess not. No. Be careful?
[Theyβre standing at the vault entrance, halfway through wiring the keypad to the new door. Three mechanical arms make up for the bad one staying under his coat, helping his good arm with careful precision through his goggles.]

[They've been working on powered-off Retro at their desk, goggles down. A robotic arm lies off to the side, and a dubstep song is playing on repeat through the lab speakers at only a mildly too loud volume. He's laser-focused, carefully working on the last of the rewiring.]
[When he's done, he closes the back panel, flipping his goggles back up and narrowing his eyes.]
...Okay. That should be fine for now. [They lower their tools, and one of their shell's mechanical arms move to turn Retro back on.] Testing. That's the circuitry taken care of.
@r3tr0-s
[His screen powers on, and he lifts his head. It's easier to process where he is this time. He turns his head to look at Don.]
S-So, What d-did you work o-on? [His voice still glitchy, but he didn't mind.]
There you are. [Don looks pleased. With Retro or with himself; it's kind of the same thing.] All of your wiring is fixed, most internal components have been repaired, and the ones that couldn't be repaired will be remade and replaced at a later date when I can afford to. I've made a replacement for your arm, we just need to attach it, I had to modify your shoulder to make that possible, don't worry about it, and once that's done we can discuss your memory drive.
[Retro looks a bit surprised.]
Already?? I forgot how fast you work. That's good, it's not fun missing an arm, but It's not like I can feel it anyway. Thank you.
Donβt have time to be taking my time. We can attach the arm now; I just needed to check that everything was working first. And that I donβt break something in the process, so if youβll stay on so I can make sure everything is fine, that would be great.
[They pick up the arm from the desk, the shellβs arms wiping it down with a cloth.] Give me your shoulder?
[Retro turns so that his shoulder was facing Don.]
This good?
Mmmhm, thank you. [More arms extend from the shell to help him get the precision right - his bad arm is folded in his lap. He carefully starts wiring the arm in.]
With your memory drive - I have a program from when I rebuilt Shelldon that will help. It should restore as much as it can. As with his, though, it canβt restore everything. A lot of his memories were destroyed and never retrieved, I feel yours might be the same.
I. Uh, I g-guess that's f-fine. It's not like I had much of important ones a-anyway. Though, I-I hope I didn't f-forget everything. [He wasn't really didn't mind; he just didn't want to forget anyone.]
I doubt you'd forget everything. [He bites his cheek, goggles zooming in to work closely on the arm's socket.] Tell me when you can move your fingers.
Shelldon's memory from before the apocalypse is pretty much closest to a human memory; that's how big the gaps are. Which is fine. So I'm hoping yours is similar to that and not similar to... amnesia.
But AI - especially AI as advanced as yours - is unpredictable. So I can't know for sure.
Either way, I'm sure it'll be fine. There are worse things that could happen. [That could've happened.]
W-Well, that's n-not that bad. I-It's fine, I g-guess. [Retro waited for the moment he could move his fingers. He felt guilty about having to make Don do all this.]
Uhh. I c-can move 'em now.
[He tried his hardest to not let hus guilt show.]
Okay. [They clean up the last of the arm's wiring before putting the tools down, shaking out his hand with a sigh.]
[He pushes his chair back, standing up and stretching his good arm behind his neck.] Mkay. I'll give you the program, you can let it run in the background. I think it's fine for you to leave the lab now.
But before that - what's the problem?
[He stiffens.]
Uh, w-what problem? I-I am p-perfectly fine. Th-There is no p-problem here. [He has a very nervous tone.] Promise, e-everything is f-fine.
... [The goggles cover his eyes, but he's clearly frowning. He doesn't move.]
Uh, pro tip: Saying "there is no problem here" "everything is perfectly fine" in a tone that conveys the exact opposite is actually ten times more concerning than just stating the problem. I would really like to just fix the problem instead. Or at least know what there is to be preparing for. So dearest Retro, what is wrong?
[He looked worried. He really did not want Don worrying about him. It was a stupid thing to worry about and was technically all his fault, meaning he should really only be the one worrying about it.]
I- uh. [He avoids looking into Don's goggles. He REALLY did not want to tell him, but, what's the point of lying? He sucks at it anyway.]
..sighs, O-Okay. I uhm. I f-feel really guilty about you h-having to do a-all of, t-this. Like, you d-didn't have to, and e-everything is my fault. If I w-would've stayed in the b-base, none of this would've happened.
[...Ohhhh. This is a feelings problem. Not a mechanical problem.]
[That's actually worse.]
... [They hum, flipping their goggles up to look to the side.] I see. So, you and every child who mistakenly goes to the surface, then.
Retro, it's fine. I already said it's fine. This is my job, you are part of my job, so is keeping you alive. You're an AI, it was bound to happen that you'd make a decision with an unfavourable outcome. Nova's done it, Shelldon's done it (many, many times), I've done it. Frankly, if anyone is to blame for that, it's me, but uhhhhh... No further comment.
[He knew that it was his job, but for some reason he just hated when it had to be him.]
I- You s-sure?
Yes, I'm sure. Do you make everyone you fix feel guilty for ending up in medbay?
Uh, N-No? At l-least I don't t-think so. That o-or I'm r-really bad at reading p-people.
[Retro hopes he isn't making anyone feel guilty is he is.]
β¦ [He puts his chin in his good hand, smiling behind it. See! This is what happens when he doesnβt narrate his tone. Honestly.]
That was a rhetorical question. And I also meant intentionally, because the answer (since you were not supposed to give it) is no. Youβre fine.
Can I give you your program now? Are you satisfied. Is there something else I can do
Oh! ..my bad. And uh yeah. You can give it to me. Everything's good, no more feelings stuffs. [Well that's a bit embarrassing.]
@r3tr0-s
