Ali, Brother and Elijah Muhammad Meet
Ali, and his Brother Rudy meet the Hon. Elijah Muhammad and receive their new names after becoming members of the NOI
Elijah Muhammad (1897â1975) was a religious leader, Black nationalist, and the longtime head of the Nation of Islam (NOI), an organization that played a crucial role in the fight for Black self-determination in the United States. Under his leadership, the NOI grew from a small religious movement into a major force advocating for Black economic independence, self-discipline, and separation from white America. His teachings emphasized the need for Black people to reject white supremacy, embrace self-reliance, and restore their cultural and spiritual identity.
Born Elijah Robert Poole in Sandersville, Georgia, he experienced the brutal realities of the Jim Crow South before migrating to Detroit in the 1920s. There, he became a follower of Wallace Fard Muhammad, the mysterious founder of the Nation of Islam. After Fard disappeared in 1934, Elijah Muhammad became the movementâs leader and restructured it into an organized institution with a clear political, spiritual, and economic mission.
Central to his message was the idea that Black people were the original people of the Earth, divinely chosen, while white people were a creation of Yakub, an evil scientist. He rejected the idea that integration with white society would lead to Black liberation, instead calling for economic self-sufficiency, community-building, and territorial separation. He preached strict discipline, a healthy diet, and moral conduct, believing that personal transformation was key to Black empowerment.
Under his leadership, the Nation of Islam built an economic empire, including businesses, farms, schools, and newspapers that provided Black people with resources independent of white control. The NOI also gained a reputation for its militant stance on self-defense, contrasting with the nonviolent approach of mainstream civil rights leaders. Elijah Muhammad attracted and mentored influential figures, including Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, and Louis Farrakhan, helping to spread his teachings across the U.S.
Despite his success in mobilizing Black people, his leadership was not without controversy. His strict hierarchy and control over the NOI led to tensions, especially with Malcolm X, who later broke away from the organization. Additionally, revelations about his relationships with multiple young women, leading to children out of wedlock, created internal conflicts that shook the organization.
Elijah Muhammad remained the leader of the NOI until his death in 1975. His legacy is one of Black empowerment, economic self-determination, and spiritual discipline, and his influence can still be seen today in various Black nationalist movements and organizations. His teachings helped redefine Black consciousness in America, reinforcing ideas of self-love, sovereignty, and racial pride, and challenging the structures of white supremacy that had long sought to suppress Black progress.
