if you’re going on a vacation to the Big Island of Hawai'i, here are some helpful things to keep in mind!

•No one wears aloha print clothes. Literally. The only time anyone wears aloha print is if there’s a special occasion or event (graduation party, funeral, wedding, whichever) and that’s how people identify tourists. It’s okay to wear them, obviously. Wear all the aloha print you want, you know like do you or whatever but just know you’ve now got a big flashing identifier.

•If the locals give you dirty looks, don’t take it personally. We’ve been victims of the White Man coming to our state and trying to take over for years. Yes, they know it wasn’t actually you that imprisoned our Queen and banished our sacred dance and language. No, they don’t care.

•Respect our lands. Don’t litter. Our ‘āina means a lot to the people who live here. Respect the monuments, the many sacred heiau, and the beaches. Hawaiians are a spiritual people and disrespecting the land is a direct insult to us.

•If you go to Volcanoes National Park, do not! I repeat: DO NOT!!! Take anything home!! Don’t take Pele’s Tears or Pele’s Hair home with you when you leave. You can take as many photos as you want, but don’t take those. Also, please please please don’t get brave on any of the trails. The paths are slippery when wet and while most of the trails have railings and a barrier to block off the cliff side, the fall is dangerous, possibly fatal. Stick to the path and watch your footing.

•Boiling Pots is never a safe place to swim. Do nOT

•Kuhio Grill at the Prince Kuhio Plaza serves some of the best Hawaiian Food. Their Haupia is the shizzle.

•Please watch your children while you’re at the beach! Places like King’s Landing and Hakalau can be very dangerous so keep an extra eye on them there. If there are warning signs, PLEASE heed them.

•Don’t be that douche who purposefully gets the Hawaiian words wrong because you think it’s funny. It’s not. At all.

•The Umauma Falls Ziplining Experience is ace and if you can get them to lock you out of the last line, try not to piss yourself as you dangle over that raging river :)
