Born in Venice in 1549, Contarini was a skilled student of the works of Tintoretto and formeostly Titian, whose style he tried to emulate. Some years of his life were passed at the court of the Emperor Rudolf II in Prague, with whom he was a great favorite and by whom he was knighted (after Sotheby's Catalogue Note). In 1597, he returned to Venice, where he was accepted into the painters' guilds. He died there in 1605.

This daring scene was commissioned either as a purely religious scene for a church or chapel, or as an allegory against the man depicted as the saint's tormentor.
