Do You Really Want It by Nothing More

“Yeah, no kidding.”

A very impulsive response passes her lips—but she catches herself only a second later, making an effort to backpedal as quickly as possible.

“Er—rather, I understand what you mean.” She clears her throat awkwardly, glancing away in embarrassment for a quick second, before collecting herself.

“I've found that a lot of the more ‘important’ people in the world—royals, politicians—who want to bring change to the world...find it hard to find fault in themselves. The ‘little’ people—minorities, those in poverty—they’ve seen and experienced the dirty underside of the world, and that can give them the empathy needed to both make the world better and to better their own behavior.

“However, if you don’t have that experience, that empathy, you could become completely stuck to your own point of view, with no acceptance of those who don’t agree with you... though, that isn’t to say that this couldn’t happen to someone who does have that empathy. Plus, having trauma doesn’t automatically make you a good person.

“I guess what I’m trying to say is... humans are very complicated and very stubborn. Empathy is a vital tool in changing the world for the better, and if you don’t have it, or at least understand that it’s important, any changes you do manage to bring may very well just make things worse.”
