Okayyy, Another Headcanon Time (AKA torturing you with an stupid amount of writing): That moment when Starscream asks if heβs disturbed by experimenting on Breakdownβs corpse and Knockout just says βNot reallyβ? Yeah. That line kinda haunts me. So, being me, I overthought and got this instead:
Because itβs not that he didnβt care. It of Breakdown he lovedβhis spark, his presence, his personhoodβwas already gone. The frame? The finish? The bulk and shine Knockout used to brag about? That wasnβt Breakdown anymore.
And thatβs what makes it so interesting. Knockout, whoβs obsessed with looks, who literally catcalled other bots using Breakdown as the gold standard (βYouβre real heavy-duty, just like my friend hereβ to Optimus / βYouβre no Breakdown, but Iβve always admired your lustrous finishβ to Starscream)βhe doesnβt even flinch when that same body is desecrated.
Because he never loved Breakdown for his armor or frame. He loved him for his spark. So when that spark was gone, the body was justβ¦ parts. Just metal. Just another slab on the table. And Knockout, medic that he is, defaulted to what he knows: detachment, sarcasm, control. And Knockout knows how to handle parts and metal too. Thatβs his job. He didnβt flinch because flinching would mean admitting that Breakdown was really gone.
βNot reallyβ wasnβt coldness. It was grief, buried under ten layers of polish and pride.
Anyways, if you read all of this, thank you for letting me spiral about robot grief on the main.
Headcanon Time (AKA Listen To Me Obsessively Blabber About Shit): Knockoutβs βlackβ of reaction to Breakdownβs death wasnβt apathyβit was dissociation.
Okay but hear me out: Knockout not reacting when Breakdown died? That wasnβt him not caring. That was him shutting down. Like full-on emotional dissociation. Breakdown was his partnerβcombat partner, lab partner, life partner if you squintβand then suddenly heβs just gone. No closure. No body. No time to grieve. Just back to work, back to polishing the finish, back to pretending everythingβs fine.
And then we get to the Silas/Breakdown episode. And thatβs when it hits. Thatβs when Knockout finally reactsβbut not with tears or mourning. With cold fury. With surgical cruelty. Because seeing Breakdownβs corpse being puppeted around like a meat mech? Thatβs not just grotesque, itβs personal. Itβs a violation. Itβs the moment the grief finally claws its way out, but it comes out twisted, because Knockout doesnβt know how to process it any other way.
Yeah, the writers kinda fumbled the emotional follow-through, but if you squint (and I do, aggressively), it makes perfect sense. Knockout didnβt know how to grieve. Or maybe he did, but he didnβt have the space to. Heβs a Decepticon. A medic. He compartmentalized, because thatβs what he had to do. And when the dam finally broke, it wasnβt prettyβbut it was real.
Anyway, I think about this way too much. Still curious if anyone else read the scene the same way?

Knock Out has one of the best pun names in the entire series. Y'know, 'cause he's a knock out as in 'drop dead gorgeous/sexy,' and he's a doctor, who are known to 'knock out' patients for surgery and stuff. Also, 'knockout' as a boxing term, literally means 'decisive punch that ends a fight'. And heβs a combatant who can knock bots out cold.
Stage 3: "He's evil. He's fabulous. He's everything. And definitely gay." He's got a murder stick and a manicure, and nothing in this universe he doesn't deserve.
Stage 4: "I can fix him. Or join him." Red is the color of love and blood.
Stage 5: "Knock Out is my problematic robot husband and I shall stand by him in this life and the next."
