No one ever really likes going to dances alone. Whether it be going with a date, or a group of friends, almost everyone has someone they go with. Going to a dance or ball alone is something hardly anyone wants to do, but there are always those that have to go alone, if they want to go at all. The outcasts. Those seen as especially odd, or even those who see themselves as so much higher than others that they arenât really close to anyone.
As the Yule Ball began, there were two main outcast to be spotted, one who enjoyed being alone and was happy in the moment. The other, while wanting to feel that way, sulked. Luna didnât expect anyone to ask her to the ball, in fact, sheâd rather they not. If they had, it would all be for a joke, and that would not make the night fun. Sheâd spent a long time beforehand just picking out her earrings to go with her dress. Her blonde hair was in its normal style, hanging down loosely. Her dress was a patchwork she had made of stories her dad had told her. It was covered in colors, but especially orange, so she ended up choosing some dirigible plums, which were, in her opinion, always a good choice. She got to the ball right as it started and watched the champions dance with their partners. Harry looked especially uncomfortable and Luna chuckled before skipping off to see the drinks. She continued going around happily, admiring everything and even dancing for a while. She was perfectly content and never felt uncomfortable or unhappy. However on the other side of the room, the same could not be said for Draco Malfoy. He leaned against the wall watching the happy couples and friends dance and laugh. He even saw people like Luna happy, even though she was alone. He scoffed, she obviously didnât know what was good for her, it was impossible to be happy at this sort of thing, but especially alone. He couldnât help but be a bit jealous. What was different from him and that good-for-nothing Potter? While he had money and status, Potter had nothing. Even his hair was unkempt, and yet he still had more friends. Malfoy shook his head and began his 7th circle around the perimeter, unsure of what else to do. While watching some of the people dancing, he ran directly into Luna âloonyâ Lovegood. âOh Iâm sorry.â She said, and then skipped away without a second glance. Malfoy looked down and scowled while brushing himself off, as if she could leave some sort of invisible trace of weirdness. He looked back, and wondered how she was so content when she had no one. He continued to wonder about this for the rest of the evening, giving up after a while and heading back to the dormitory. While both had the same situation, they took it very differently and show the perspectives of the outsiders at the Yule Ball.
